Hastings residents may wait up until Tuesday before their taps can flow again after 32,500 homes in Hastings and St Leonards-on-Sea were affected on Thursday when a mains pipe burst, leaving only about 2000 homes without access to running water. On Monday Southern Water reported that approximately 25,500 of the homes affected had had their water restored and that a “significant number” of remaining properties should return by late afternoon or lunchtime on Tuesday – though approximately two thousand in St Helens Wood would likely not see supply restored until tomorrow morning or lunchtime. Water suppliers blamed this shortage on residents being served by Fairlight reservoir, which wasn’t yet enough stocked up with enough water to meet demand for homes typically served from it. At first there were fears over the weekend that Jack in the Green, an annual festival held annually by Hastings that marks summer’s approach, could be seriously disrupted or cancelled altogether due to this shortage. Though affected by rain on Monday, the festival continued largely without incident or interruptions. Keith Leech, chair of trustees for the event told BBC: “On a bank holiday weekend like this it certainly doesn’t give the town what they need.” All pubs, restaurants and hotels were considering closing; fortunately on this side of town they have managed to keep running as normal despite any challenges that may be presented by Hastings’ history and current issues. Also on Monday was Hastings’ Jack in the Green parade with over one thousand participants participating! Festival attendees told the BBC they have been filling buckets full of sea water to flush their toilets at festivals. The May Day Run saw thousands of motorbikes and scooters descend upon Hastings’ seafront for another successful edition. Sapphyre Callaghan told BBC she had to close her food shop temporarily due to staff absence but still participated in Jack in the Green festival with her stall at its Jack in the Green festival stall. “We were out for three full days preparing for Jack in the Green,” she noted, and it proved challenging preparing. Thanks to festivals, however, she noted, they do have facilities available to them to boil water and wash hands with it as necessary; but by Saturday they had decided that due to lack of water they couldn’t continue operating [their shop]. Tara Flood, who still had no water as of Monday afternoon in Hastings, attended the festival. She told BBC: ‘Low pressure last night but no water this morning is an absolute disgrace – we visited Rye Road Water Station staff have been absolutely wonderful!” Since yesterday we’ve not been able to flush our toilet. This is clearly unacceptable. Sally-Ann Hart, MP for Hastings and Rye told SussexWorld last Thursday that she had spoken to Steve Barclay, Environment Secretary. In doing so she applied pressure for Southern Water to return water supplies as quickly and as quickly as possible.” Our morning email provides you with key stories of the day as they happen – with context about any charities involved, online ads that appear, or content funded from external parties (with their contact info included in each story) along with additional updates and notices about potential privacy risks from third parties such as these announcements.” Our morning email brings you our key stories of each day along with relevant updates that go beyond newsletter promotion; simply subscribe for more useful stories without newsletter promotion; bypass newsletter promotion! Once resupply began in certain areas, Southern Water announced they are redeploying 24 tankers as support to support those still without service. “Bottled water stations will remain open from 8am to 9pm today and efforts are currently being undertaken to ensure all primary, secondary schools, and colleges in our service area can open as normal tomorrow,” according to company representatives.
