Alexander Zverev admitted he feels “like a cow on ice sometimes”, having survived an extensive fall and an epic third set tie-break to overcome Cameron Norrie and reach Wimbledon’s Round 16 by winning in three sets: 6-4 6-4 7-6(15) on Centre Court. An honor it is, I feel truly humbled to play on Centre Court at Wimbledon; of all of the centre courts around the world I have played on, Wimbledon stands out as something more unique and exceptional. Pep Guardiola of Manchester City football club could be seen sitting in the Royal Box and encouraging Alexander Zverev during their match with 2022 semi-finalist Norrie, whom Zverev eventually beat after an extended 32 point tiebreaker lasting 20 minutes. Fourth seeded tennis player Cam is an extraordinary talent. I know grass will be his favoured surface as an eight time Wimbledon semi-finalist here; so, to compete with him at his level and stay within reach I knew it would require my best performance and game from me; thus far I am extremely contented and pleased with what has transpired.” An incredible honor, playing on Centre Court at Wimbledon remains something special and unique to me. I have enjoyed every center court around the globe but feel there’s still something more magical about Wimbledon’s court than any others I’ve visited in terms of experience and atmosphere. “For all tennis players it is an honor and privilege to compete on this beautiful Center Court and in front of the Royal Box; today there were so many sporting legends present; when I saw Pep I got extremely nervous. Thank you all so much; it is indeed a privilege for us all!” “Thanks a lot for coming. It has been my privilege. ” Bayern Munich needs a coach; if you are tired of football you could coach me on a tennis court any time! Regarding his fall, the tall and gangly German added: “Sometimes it feels like being cowered on an icy lake; still I made it through somehow. “My movements feel limited at times but I will examine what could be hindering them further; nevertheless, it was great being able to play as I wanted; had I played at lower level, Cam would have easily beat me!” At first glance, Norrie faced daunting odds as he entered this event on grass. His preparation had not been ideal with three first round losses at Queen’s and Eastbourne to open proceedings; yet his confidence had gradually built through The Championships by reaching the third round and beating fellow Brit Jack Draper, while still not winning over Zverev in five previous encounters.” Never overthrow a world top five at any major tournament. And his opponent was looking to extend their 20-match unbeaten run against left-handeders, but 2022 semi-finalist and left-hander Benoit Beranke made an even start against Zverev (who reached the French Open final last month) before falling apart during game seven of opening play as Zverev broke him and took control. While the opening four games of the second set proceeded without incident, drama ensued in game five when two serves from either player failed. His German opponent suffered damage to both knees after slipping on the turf with his left and landing awkwardly near an umpire’s chair, collapsing on both. He then took some time for recovery before continuing. At first there had been speculation as to whether Norrie’s confidence might diminish after such an experience; but that concern proved false as soon as he resumed walking again. 2020 Olympic champion Milos Raonic moved as gracefully as ever, his forehand and serve formidable weapons. When Norrie lost serve at 4-4 in set one, Raonic broke and served out for a two-set lead; seemingly repeating that scenario early in set two at 4-4; it seemed likely it might happen again until Norrie saved another break point and went into that dramatic tiebreaker; each battled tooth-and-nail to gain the upper hand in game three and four respectively. Under pressure from British No. 1-ranked Cameron Norrie (photo by Mike Hewitt/Getty Images), Zverev ultimately claimed six match points before closing it out with victory on his sixth try and awarding congratulations for a match well fought. Cameron Norrie then extended congratulations for their hard fought battle to Alexander Zverev before shaking hands after their match(photo credit: Mike Hewitt/Getty Images).
