Patrick Roy made it abundantly clear before 20-year-old Isaiah George made his NHL debut that there would be no shielding provided against Pittsburgh Penguins stars during their clashes, such as protection. Roy stated “we aren’t protecting him here at all; there won’t be anything similar happening,” adding: “we want to see exactly what his capabilities are 100%. “That means a lot,” George responded when Roy showed trust in him after his turnover. He explained how, on this play, they simply attempted to change sides by trying a reverse play before heeling their stick off in response. In spite of their mistake they kept an optimistic approach and continued playing without worrying too much about that shift happening again. “Roy didn’t need to explain his decision; we knew why he made it. George was playing his fifth professional game and first NHL game. Roy noticed how quickly and well George dealt with mistakes after an impressive start; once seeing that his mistake wasn’t taken lightly by Roy there were no concerns playing forward with George; giving shifts late in the third and even overtime (4-on-4 after penalties) proved how highly Roy thought of George: outstanding performance.” “Except for one turnover, I thought he played well today,” Roy noted. “He skates well and moves well; with more experience comes comfort on the ice; good for him!” Tonight I was so glad he could join us as I thought he played very well for his first game – not only playing many minutes but even going the distance and even making overtime appearance. Congratulations kid on an outstanding debut performance. “The Hockey News recently caught up with Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson to hear what he thought of George’s debut. According to Dobson, George “played really well and displayed good poise out there”. “Coming into such an experienced game was never going to be easy for someone new, but George looked good, was poised and made smart plays that helped our team.” I am glad he came in; his contribution has been fantastic for our cause.” We asked Dobson how well George can recover after making mistakes like in this matchup. “Mistakes happen, so when they do it’s up to me and my partners to clean it up.” Dobson stated. “He brushed himself off, went back out there, had an awesome shift afterwards – this is exactly what is desired of them all.” “Any time there’s been an error on our team, the goal should always be to come back out the next shift and work past it – and he did just that brilliantly! “Whether Alexander Romanov (day-to-day, upper body) returns later this week or Mike Reilly can find some way back, George earned another game.” Roy showed complete trust early on as well as double the minutes played compared with Dennis Cholowski (8 hours of Ice Time in total). On Wednesday the Islanders are off before facing Ottawa Senators Thursday evening in Canada at 7 PM ET.”
