Just received this email from Intuit and it appears they’ve finally abandoned physical media:

Starting in tax year 2024, TurboTax Desktop customers will see that we are shifting away from offering CD formats of our software products in favor of only offering download versions. All retailers or TurboTax.com still carry download products containing license codes with instructions on how to download and install them; rest assured, however, the same great experience of TurboTax will still exist when downloading through these methods – download products will become available starting around November.

2018 appears to have been my final purchase on CD, so I don’t feel particularly distressed about that fact.

Gryphon posted his last edit at 1:51 pm, making 1 change total. Went on for nearly 6 years without updating my CD? Nevermind it finally got here… Irene made this thread last fall (June 9th 2024 9:30 am, as reported here by Irene), though she only joined up recently 66 posts were created at one time (Thu Sep 5th 10pm by Kbg). Over the past three or four years, I’ve switched over to using online version for transactions instead of leaving all my information with them. Now preferring it!

One reason I use TurboTax at all is because it remembers what was left from last year and saves time, while switching to online version (which did not access last year’s desktop return) would not do the job. Perhaps next year when Direct File has expanded more I may give that route a go and hope not having to deal with Intuit again would make life simpler!

2024 TurboTax will no longer be available on CD (Luke 9th Oct. 11pm ET).
As a comparison, I have used H&R Block for many years – for the first year I requested both CD and download install (although only during one tax season); since then the only method has been download only with no issues whatsoever. Although they email their registration key initially, in recent years this key self propagates itself automatically during download install – the download link+token being distinct than product key; I usually purchase H&R Block during NewEgg’s Thanksgiving sale where they typically send my download link+product key within minutes and even showed up as part of their order acknowledgement screen last year!

Yes, this means you can still access the desktop version via download – something I find more convenient as no physical CD needs to be mislaid or sent through mail delivery – I’ve used download versions of both TT or HR for years and enjoy their convenience!

I have been keeping CDs to use if ever necessary during an audit (to remember how I completed past returns). Although this has yet to happen, have others taken similar precautions?

The topic for today is TurboTax 2024 will not be available on CD in 2024 (Fat Tails posted here earlier today.). For your information: it won’t be released for sale either (Better late than never…).
I keep CDs as backup copies in case I ever need a reminder how I completed returns (such as during an audit) I could use an earlier TT version from one of those CDs to retrace previous returns – though so far that hasn’t happened! Has anybody else taken such steps before?

I still keep my CDs. They have never proven useful to me either.
