Greater than 80 pilot whales have died after mysteriously changing into stranded on a seaside in Scotland. The mass stranding of the complete pod is regarded as the most important the nation has seen in practically 30 years.

Locals reported the stranding to rescuers round 10:45 a.m. native time (5:45 a.m. ET) on Thursday (July 11), in response to a statement from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR). The scene unfolded on a seaside on Sanday, within the northern Scottish archipelago of Orkney. The stranded animals have been long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas), which are literally giant dolphins named after their unusually lengthy pectoral fins.
