Good morning to all and especially to The Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals for setting an historic precedent this week with their tiebreaking Division Series win in Cleveland – marking only one time ever that all four Division Series have reached this point! There has certainly been no lack of excitement or drama to get us there. Kerry Carpenter delivered the Tigers their first American League Division Series victory since 2013, leading them to victory with an epic three-run homer off Guardians super closer Emmanuel Clase in Game 2. Carpenter became only the third Tiger ever to hit a go-ahead home run late in a playoff game (joining Magglio Ordonez (2006) and Al Kaline (1972). Even more surprising? Clase has pitched in 76 games this year alone! Clase rarely allows multiple runs; Carpenter’s home run had an exit velocity of 110.8mph – the hardest-hit ball off Clase during his entire career – making this win the exception. The Tigers had dropped 15 straight playoff games when tied or trailing entering the ninth inning before Tarik Skubal shut them out over seven scoreless innings with just three hits allowed and eight strikeouts; only 5 other pitchers ever have completed at least 6 scoreless innings in both their opening playoff appearances! Pretty impressive stuff indeed!
Kansas City Royals evened up their series with New York Yankees with an easy 4-2 victory, closing out New York 1-0 after three innings via Salvador Perez’s solo homer and RBI singles from Tommy Pham, Garrett Hampson, and Maikel Garcia. Jazz Chisholm Jr. attempted a ninth-inning home run as Kansas City only extra base hit of the evening but Lucas Erceg made sure things ended without further incident – an incredible opening week of playoff baseball that only gets more intense! Matt Snyder comments further highlights just how high stakes games have become this past week – now this first week is only getting bigger as its implications grow!
Honorable Mentions Getty Images has also made several honorable mentions. Chiefs Defeat Saints behind Tight Defense
Though their results haven’t always been pretty, the Chiefs continue their progress while trying to figure out their offense. Kansas City defeated New Orleans 26-13 thanks to Patrick Mahomes and an effective defensive performance that continues to impress. Mahomes completed 331 pass attempts for 331 yards; 130 went directly to JuJu Smith-Schuster alone! Smith-Schuster recorded his best game since 2018, running for 102 yards – his highest mark since 2020 and scoring one touchdown, as did Kareem Hunt and Xavier Worthy on the ground. Meanwhile, New Orleans only managed 220 total yards at an average play length of only 4.3. Derek Carr left with an oblique injury after only 15 career games against Kansas City; Kansas City amassed season-high total yards (462), never trailed and never led at any point during this matchup. Khalen Saunders made headlines for an extraordinary interception and return of 324 pounds at Khalen Saunders’ 3rd down intercept. All other signs pointed to an encouraging result. With Rashee Rice expected to miss most or all of this season and Isiah Pacheco remaining sidelined for multiple weeks more, the Chiefs are finding solutions. After being cut by New England nearly two months ago, Smith-Schuster took some of Rashee Rice’s duties, with Travis Kelce providing strong performances as replacements in Rice’s absence; Kelce had 70 yards receiving while Hunt recently joined their practice squad as well.
Injury has plagued numerous teams this season, yet when led by Mahomes, Andy Reid, Steve Spagnuolo and Steve Spagnuolo there are always solutions available to them. Get our NHL season preview, Stanley Cup picks here.

Today marks the inaugural game of this NHL season! Officially it began last Thursday when the Devils beat Sabres twice in Prague, Czechia; but North American play starts tonight with three great match-ups to get us going: Blues at Kraken; Bruins against Panthers (Florida’s inaugural game as reigning champ); Blackhawks against Utah Hockey Club (in their franchise’s debut); Panthers remain solidly in Austin Nivison’s “Stanley Cup or bust” tier; Maple Leafs Rangers Stars are among them; while Austin Nivison ranks all this group as well.
Austin reckons the Oilers possess some of the sport’s premier players; my excitement at watching them can only increase! Here’s his Top Five list: “Connor McDavid of the Oilers has set himself apart with incredible performance over three seasons… leading the NHL in assists (268) points (408) and power play points (159).” “Nathan MacKinnon of the Avalanche scored 140 points last season and won his inaugural Hart Trophy as NHL MVP.” “Auston Matthews, C, Maple Leafs — While Austin Matthews came close to scoring 70 goals last season, his 69 tallied were still more than Mario Lemieux scored during 1995-96.” “David Pastrnak, Wing for Bruins — Pastrnak is one of a select few NHL wings responsible for driving play in the offensive zone, and proved his mettle by shouldering such an immense responsibility during 2023-24.” Leon Draisaitl of the Oilers stands out among all players as an offensive talent he does not take second fiddle to in terms of offensive ability. Austin ranks him with 10 players that make him proudest: McDavid being top dog but there are others too.” Here’s Austin’s full top 10. Although individual stars cannot make champions; teams make winners. Austin and Chris Bengel share their Stanley Cup picks. Nivison wrote, “Stars beat Devils — While the Stars may have downgraded their defensive depth in free agency, this deficit can easily be made up with their potency forward group — more powerful even than any Galactic Empire fleet could assemble! Jake Oettinger provides some stellar goaltending as the Blues edge past the Oilers in a rematch of last season’s conference final. “Oilers over Rangers — Edmonton has built up its roster over time with veteran forwards like Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson joining its top six. Additionally, Stuart Skinner reestablished himself as an excellent netminder. Furthermore, Edmonton also picked up awards picks like Jeff Skinner.
