Since this summer has begun, numerous news reports have noted the St. Louis Blues are on course to miss the playoffs for yet another consecutive year. At this juncture, they need key players to step up. However, the organization remains committed to staying competitive rather than rebuilding and has added several players in order to strengthen its lineup. However, three players from within the organization need to step it up this year in 2024-25 in order to give themselves and the Blues better chances at returning to contention. We provide below three Blues players that need to step it up this season so as to give themselves and the team better odds at coming out victorious in 2025-25. Please view original article to access embedded media content. Let us make the obvious obvious. Let us state this fact clearly and bluntly: Let us state the obvious fact of Jordan Binnington’s presence here today as well as her subsequent impact. If the Blues make the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, their chances will likely depend on Jordan Binnington regaining form as their goaltender of 2019. Binnington showed signs of improvement this past season with both goals-against average (2.84) and save percentage (.913) improvements following two subpar campaigns (2021-22 and 2022-23). Ironically, Binnington experienced two consecutive subpar years after signing his six-year extension worth $6 Million per season. For such money to be earned by someone – especially goaltenders like Binnington who should have performed as expected over these last three seasons – their performance should reflect it fully. Unfortunately for him however, that has not happened. Binnington made strides during 2023-24, yet still allowed four or more goals on multiple starts that cost them games. Furthermore, Binnington may use his potential competition from Joel Hofer as fuel to elevate his game even more. After Head Coach Craig Berube was fired, many fans turned their fury against Kyrou as one of the primary factors responsible for it. Before Drew Bannister made his coaching debut against Ottawa on December 14, 2023, Kyrou addressed media prior to this game and spoke in detail. Kyrou’s response when asked about his relationship with Berube was, “I don’t have anything to say; he is no longer my coach. ” This response struck a nerve with Blues fans who then began booing every time Kyrou touched the puck in that particular game. At postgame interviews with media representatives after that game, he attempted to control his emotions when speaking of how difficult his performance had been for fans and when discussing why some had started booing him at games – at that point in the season only five goals and 18 points had been earned through 29 matches played so far by Blues speedster Ryan O’Reilly. Well, Jordan took full advantage of all that drama by scoring 26 goals and 50 points over his next 54 games – something Robert Thomas accomplished last season – setting off an eight million dollar contract to justify himself by staying consistent while carrying his line without needing Thomas as helper. Nick Leddy: 33 years old defenseman Nick Leddy joined the franchise during 2021-22 from Detroit Red Wings after their acquisition during 2021-22 season, entering his third season here after coming over from NY Islanders during his prime years of playback defenseman. However, Leddy may never match what was achieved under former New York Islanders captain Barry Trotz’s watch as an NHL defenseman during that period of dominance on defence. However, in order to stay relevant in his top-four role for St Louis Blues he cannot let age show or interfere with his play. T.J. Brodie illustrated what can happen when age catches up to veteran defenseman over 10 seasons ago when playing for Toronto Maple Leafs last season. At last, Brodie was left out of Toronto’s playoff roster during their devastating first-round exit at the hands of Boston. Leddy appears set for another successful year with the Blues this season as he begins alongside Colton Parayko as their number-one defenseman, where he held down that spot throughout last season. However, Parayko and Leddy did not always work well together. Their opponents’ top players gave them tough competition every night and this could be seen through their deficient analytical statistics. As a pair, these players had an outstanding Corsi percentage (43.37%), shooting 45.21% for attempts, 43.27% scoring chances and 41.81% high-danger chances. All below 50% performance from your top pair is definitely concerning, particularly as Leddy has seen his foot speed decrease when going back for puck retrieval duties. This change can be observed easily when Leddy returns. Forecheckers are getting more aggressive, forcing him into quicker decisions with the puck, forcing veteran over 1,000 NHL games with Chicago Blackhawks 2013 Stanley Cup Champions Patrick Kane make faster decisions with it and forcing his first passes off breakouts to remain accurate rather than needing to rush them all of the time.
