Although, with time comes experience and understanding. So here we are today, ready for another year-of-happiness journey, all thanks to an intelligent yet playful young lady from Surrey called Amber who decided she had had enough and took matters into her own hands and created this masterpiece of an album called ‘La Bete aux Roses’ by offering to write out every letter on every sheet in my library collection – leaving an unbiased chancer like myself free time on Sunday nights to just chillax with some tunes on top of all that… and finally… On Friday at the WTA Finals Riyadh presented by PIF, Gabriela Dabrowski & Erin Routliffe from New Zealand were victorious against American Nicole Melichar-Martinez & Ellen Perez from Australia by winning 6-1 7-6(7) to advance into the doubles final at Riyadh presented by PIF; next they’ll face Katerina Siniakova & Taylor Townsend from USA as No 8 seeds who managed another Houdini act by knocking off Taipei Chan Hao-ching & Veronika Kudermetova from Russia 7th seeds Chan Hao-ching’s Chan Hao-ching’s Chan Hao-ching & Veronika Kudermetova Russian 7th seeds Chan Hao-ching/Veronika Kudermetova from Russia 7th seeds Chan Hao-ching/Veronika Kudermetova 7th seeds from Taipei Chan Hao-ching with another victory with an impressive 7-6(1) 6-1 victory! Our partnership is absolutely phenomenal and truly astounding – I wish Erin the very best on her next journey with me as it takes her even farther! Gabriela Dabrowski & Rob Routliffe won an intense first set against serve, seizing set point with Routliffe’s quick reactions at the net defending Perez shots to earn set point and force Australian Maria Perez to throw down her racket in frustration. After that set point was won on serve when Melichar-Martinez couldn’t handle Routliffe’s shots Dabrowski & Routliffe wrapped up their match within 1 hour 32 minutes of playback. “My start wasn’t stellar; Erin got off to an outstanding start,” Dabrowski admitted, but she stood by me throughout. As such, that gave me freedom as the match progressed to go after shots, serves, and plays that fit me best; keeping me very present.” Routliffe agrees, emphasizing the significance of strong partnerships. She stressed the value of mutual support for any level of doubles play: “We always try to bring out the best in each other”, according to Routliffe. “Our aim is always to have fun and stay lighthearted even if things are going sour – something especially essential when playing doubles – so make sure that if anyone’s involved, make sure they back their partners!” Last year’s semi-final was won by Melichar-Martinez & Perez 6-1 6-7(1) [10-6], however this year Dabrowski & Routliffe overcame early break down to save one set point and reach their first year-end championship final.” “[I’ve] competed at the WTA Finals many times before; reaching semi-finals was my best result with Erin at Cancun last year,” noted 32-year-old Dabrowski, competing for six times at end-of-year doubles tournaments such as Cancun this time around. “So being one round closer is really exciting for us all!” “To have been part of it together is truly remarkable; to win six sets in one sitting can never be easy!” Townsend noted afterwards. “When playing so well, it can be easy to have expectations of continuing such performance – only for your opponents to adapt quickly – which we saw played out. “More importantly, our strength came from standing by one another when one felt down while the other one rose up – or vice versa; and celebrating those moments of coming together that we both did together as one team! I am extremely proud to call us my teammates!” Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend of Poland came out victorious against Veronika Kudermetova & Chan Hao-Ching of Ukraine to claim year-end World Doubles No 1 after Friday evening semis play at King Saud University Indoor Arena, Saudi Arabia (c/ Matthew Stockman/Getty Images for WTA).
