Qatar Airways’ inaugural non-stop flight to Hamburg Airport (HAM), in Germany has arrived, marking daily non-stop services between Hamad International Airport in Doha – named this year by Skytrax as “World Best Airport & Retail Experience” – and Hamburg (HAM).
Qatar Airways now serves five destinations across Germany – Berlin, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Munich are already fully taken. Due to strong market demand in Germany in 2023 alone, Skytrax 2024 saw outbound passenger growth increase 62% year over year from Germany alone!
This new route expands Qatar Airlines’ existing global route network of over 170 destinations and connects travellers from northern Germany directly to Doha – while making Hamburg even more accessible for people living outside Qatar.
This route also supports economic and trade ties between northern Germany, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, and will contribute to up to an 11 per cent rise in Hamburg’s cargo sector compared to last year.
Dr. Peter Tschentscher, First Mayor of Hamburg; Mr. Ali Al-Boainian (Charge de Affair of Qatar Embassy Berlin in Berlin); Mr. Thierry Antinori, Chief Commercial Officer Qatar Airways; Eng Abdulaziz Ali Al Mawlawi of Visit Qatar and H.E Lothar Freischlader German Ambassador to Qatar as well as Christian Kunsch CEO of Hamburg Airport as well as Dr Malte Heyne CEO of Hamburg Chamber of Commerce were in attendance to welcome this historic flight! Hamburg Airport stands as its oldest commercial airport with this city being at its centre for global trade and travel.
Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer said “Qatar Airways extends a warm welcome to Hamburg as the latest stop on our extensive route network and fifth gateway in Germany – both key markets for us! Qatar and Germany continue their robust bilateral ties and we look forward to opening a route which further solidifies important economic and trade ties between our two nations through centrally-located hub in Doha which facilitates exports between East and West and vice versa, and look forward to watching its growth over coming years from one of World’s Best Airport and Best Airline.”
First Mayor Peter Tschentscher of Hamburg noted, “Hamburg is an international city, boasting centuries-old trade relations across continents. Good flight links through Hamburg Airport Helmut Schmidt are essential for its economy, science and culture of Hanseatic city. Qatar Airways is among the finest and most modern carriers available today with daily direct flights between Doha and Hamburg via Helmut Schmidt Airport Helmut Schmidt. I would like to express my sincerest thanks and wish them every success with these new flight connections from Hamburg.”
Qatar Airways Chief Commercial Officer Thierry Antinori noted: As the World’s Best Airline, we strive to offer our passengers access to award-winning Qatar Airways service and inflight product via Hamad International Airport, recently named World’s Best Airport Retail by Skytrax 2024; evidence of which can be seen with their new route between Doha and Hamburg which offers them one of the world’s most modern yet comfortable aircraft to travel their favorite destinations whether for business or pleasure.”
Visit Qatar Chief Executive Officer Eng. Abdulaziz Ali AL Mawlawi noted, “Visit Qatar is thrilled to contribute towards another significant milestone for Qatar Airways and Qatar’s tourism sector. With this expansion comes increased global connectivity as we work toward becoming an outstanding tourist destination. Visitor experiences in Qatar stand out through exceptional services, diverse offerings and immersive activities; by welcoming German visitors we foster cultural exchange and expand tourism landscape.”
Christian Kunsch, Chief Executive Officer of Hamburg Airport, warmly welcomed Qatar Airways to Hamburg. As northern Germany’s largest commercial airport, our goal is to be well connected internationally – this new link to Doha as one of the fastest growing hubs will greatly enhance this connectivity and allow more flexible travel plans while expanding Hamburg as both an economic hub and travel destination.”
Dr Malte Heyne, Chief Executive of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce said international accessibility is of prime importance in Hamburg as Germany’s primary foreign trade centre. Qatar Airways’ Doha hub strengthens that link to global trade while direct flight connections add attraction for investors, tourists and events organizers.
Hamad International Airport in Doha serves as an ideal hub for long-distance travel from Germany. Qatar Airways routes include some popular long-haul destinations for German travellers like Maldives, Singapore, Philippines Bangkok Cape Town as well as lesser known gems like Goa India Kilimanjaro Tanzania Chengdu China to ensure passengers a seamless travel experience.
