However, I would suggest the opposite – an increase of resources through investing in technology can only serve to further extend your own reach and presence on this world of ours. Nashville PredatorsHaving secured three of the premier free agents available – Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault and Brady Skjei – made NHL free agency look like a great success for Nashville. Unfortunately they’ve since seen much less. After shelling out more than $108 million within hours on July 1 and raising Stanley Cup-contending expectations with their massive signing haul, Nashville is sitting dead last in the league despite beginning the year off worst ever start in franchise history. They have dropped 10 of 14 games so far and in their most recent loss had more penalty minutes than shots taken against them at Washington. “Nothing can be changed back now; you just can’t feel sorry for yourself,” Stamkos lamented after their 3-2 setback at DC. “We find ourselves in this difficult position and must find our way back. Last season’s guys in this locker room experienced similar struggles early on before finding solutions; for us newcomers to this system it may take more time.” “No matter our expectations for change to happen instantly, sometimes things take more time. For instance, that Capitals game included shots ricocheting off one or both posts or the crossbar as almost-goals that don’t count toward scoring any real goals and didn’t build confidence,” stated Boulware. Ryan O’Reilly acknowledged his own inability to score at 5 on 5 this season without prompting. At least there have been opportunities presented themselves since last game when there weren’t. Nashville suffered its third shutout loss of the season against Los Angeles and suffered its worst defeat of all to Florida Panthers 6-2 last night.” As such, consistency is clearly missing from Nashville’s game; instead frustration has set in. “Frustration’s been seeping through,” admitted second-year coach Andrew Brunette, whose job will almost certainly come up for discussion if their losing continues. He continued: “Sometimes frustration gets confused with work or effort and vice versa.” “Brunette, who played 1,159 NHL games before becoming interim coach when the Panthers posted one of the greatest regular seasons ever in 2021-22, doesn’t appear concerned by his first burst of effort.” He noted that success at this level requires constant hard work from each member of a team and Stamkos knows his teammates are working just as hard for each win they earn in 2020 and 21. There was never any doubt about their dedication either! He wondered whether Nashville had been working hard but “not necessarily smart. “Nashville outshoots opponents 445-411 but has been outscored 50-33. Part of that comes from players shirk defensive responsibilities to try to achieve goals they haven’t seen come. Brunette believes when players don’t score as they were used to, their instinctual tendencies return and cause problems with scoring. “Often when this occurs, players revert back to prior scoring habits which helped them.” “This has moved us a bit towards the perimeter and away from scoring goals; Stamkos finally has scored more often this season; scoring three in four games after only scoring once through 10.” Not surprisingly, team success hasn’t followed Juuse Saros into goal; one constant has been his performance under contract extension worth just under $62 million that keeps him under contract until 2033. “He’s our rock,” Stamkos noted of Saros. His save percentage stands at 904 but that has suffered due to some of what’s happened around him; thus saving 95 goals more than average during that span. “Within our poor record this season, our fate may have been even greater had it not been for him…. He’s such an effective defensive presence back there that we consider ourselves blessed to have him on board.” Unfortunately for their team and fans alike, the Predators have also suffered through some unfortunate results this season. Nashville has scored on just 7.4% of their shots this season – second worst among NHL clubs and behind only Edmonton Oilers who have also struggled early. Edmonton’s inauspicious start prompted coach firing and Kris Knoblauch hire that led them all the way to Game 7 of final. That should give Nashville hope that things may turn around quickly this season. But this time of year has seen Oilers fortunes begin their downturn, prompting Predators’ players to realize there’s urgency for an immediate solution. “We need results now,” noted O’Reilly – who won the Cup with St Louis this season – “and we must stay with it – patience might not be appropriate here but desperation may. Our entire group must come together as one to figure this thing out quickly – not all acting independently but working toward getting out of this. Eventually we know we will.”
