Potential Oilers trade candidates include Leon Draisaitl as part of Connor McDavid’s long-term plan in Edmonton.
Sportsnet: Mike Futa spoke on the Jeff Marek Show with Mike Marchese about Leon Draisaitl’s need to extend his contract extension and several Oilers who could possibly be traded. Marchese made mention of some names.
Marchese noted, they also brought back Adam Henrique – I forgot to mention him – but Ryan McLeod is probably the easiest player to move at this stage – I assume that is on his way out.”
Evander Kane does present some difficulties due to the no-move clause; ultimately it depends on any injury issues he might be suffering from.
Dylan Holloway was outstanding during their playoff run for them and showed surprising physicality that most didn’t expect from him; plus they still need to re-up with Philip Broberg so there is some work that needs doing in that department as well.
NHL Rumors: Kings, Blackhawks, Blues and Blue Jackets
The main question surrounding the Oilers right now focuses around Leon Draisaitl’s future contract extension; whether or not he decides to extend in Edmonton and if not what should happen next as you don’t want free agency to become the course of action here when only one goal separates a Stanley Cup Final game seven from reaching overtime.
How should the Oilers approach Leon Draisaitl and how do you think his status with them will play out, in terms of staying or going? I think that’s one of the main questions going into next offseason period: Leon Draisailt will likely play some sort of key role affecting Connor McDavid and how that impacts what decisions will be made then?
Futa expressed confidence that Futa will stay, noting his contract and having earned such respect from teammates as one of the elites within his league will bring with it an attractive payday.
But with the cap going up and the numbers they retained some players out were fantastic. People like Connor Brown had something like a $3 Million bonus I believe which became activated if he played enough games last season; suddenly his cap hit became larger than initially projected at just over $1 Million.
But at this stage, there are team-friendly deals out there and every little bit saved can only help save the team more money in the end – I mean even Jack Campbell buyout saved the organization millions! When the time is right to strike a deal with Draisaitl they should strike one and complete negotiations successfully to put all issues behind them.
McDavid will remain there as well, given its unique hockey market. However, there’s unfinished business. When Gretzky came back out here from Los Angeles he already held four Stanley Cup rings! A lot had already been accomplished before moving west.
Sidney Crosby will always remain a Pittsburgh Penguin. I could make that claim about Steven Stamkos as well, though these two players seem set on being long-term Edmonton Oilers.
And then there is that passion when considering all the pros and cons associated with certain markets and climates; being an Oiler in that particular city where hockey fever reigns supreme. I think they will continue their winning ways too if that is where their hearts lay!
NHL Rumors: Sabres, Oilers, Senators, Penguins and Canadiens I think these teams will stay long term and continue building. Once one emerges as the victor there’s always the possibility that it can turn into something special over the coming years.”
