Potential Edmonton Oilers trade candidates include Leon Draisaitl as potential long-term future for Connor McDavid at Edmonton.
Sportsnet: Mike Futa joined Mike Marchese from Sportsnet on the Jeff Marek Show for an in-depth discussion about Leon Draisaitl and Edmonton Oilers as well as possible trade options involving several Oilers players, who need a contract extension signed off on. Marchese also mentioned some players that might be available.
Marchese noted, they brought back Adam Henrique who I forgot to mention earlier; Ryan McLeod should be easier for the team to move at this time and is likely heading toward exit.
Evander Kane may present more difficulty due to his no-move clause; this decision depends on any current injuries he is dealing with.
At this point, they still must re-sign Dylan Holloway who I thought performed impressively during their playoff run, showing some very physical play that many may not have expected of him. Furthermore, Philip Broberg needs re-upping as well. So there is work left for both parties to complete in these areas.
NHL Rumors: Kings, Blackhawks, Blues and Blue Jackets mes The biggest question surrounding the Oilers really revolves around Leon Draisaitl’s contract extension decision and whether or not he will opt to extend in Edmonton; otherwise what will the outcome of free agency be like without losing such an important player when your Stanley Cup Final game seven could go to overtime anyway?
How should the Oilers handle Leon Draisaitl and do you expect that he remains there? That has always been my biggest question going into any offseason period: no matter which team, Leon Draisailt can have an effectful outcome that impacts on what happens with Connor McDavid next offseason.
Futa: “There has always been speculation and, I just think he’ll stay. There has been so much made when you look back to when he signed such an agreeable team-friendly contract – plus his recognition among elite league players means an enormous payday.”
But I think with the cap increasing and their efforts in keeping some players around were phenomenal. Last season for instance Connor Brown received an incentive bonus worth $3 Million that kicked in after playing certain amount of games; as a result he suddenly had become much larger cap hit than originally projected at just one million cap hit.
But at this stage, there are team-friendly deals being struck and every little bit saved is valuable; for instance, Jack Campbell buyout helps save cash. I think when the right moment arises to strike a deal with Draisaitl they’ll do just that and put all this behind them.
And I think Connor McDavid will stay there too; Los Angeles is an outstanding hockey market with so much unfinished business still left undone compared to when Gretzky moved there with four Stanley Cup rings already under his arm and so much had already been accomplished there.
There’s much pride in knowing that Sidney Crosby will remain a Pittsburgh Penguin for life; I would have said the same about Steven Stamkos being with Tampa Bay Lightning; however, both players appear likely to stay long-term Edmonton Oilers.
And when considering all of these elements and market considerations, one thing stands out more than any others: passion! Being an Oiler for life in one city that loves hockey so passionately means even when things look tough they will still do their best and will do well over time. I think they just know they will.
NHL Rumors: Sabres, Oilers, Senators, Penguins and Canadiens I think these teams will remain long term as they continue to build for success, and once one team clinches that first Cup there may be the potential of becoming something of a dynasty for a period. Once close you know there’s going to be some incredible things happen over time.”
