President-elect Donald Trump had already fulfilled his campaign promise of ending wars between Israel and Hamas within one day of winning the 2024 elections, his supporters claimed on social media platforms such as Facebook or Twitter. A Nov. 7, 2024 Newsweek headline stated, “Hamas Calls for Immediate End to Conflict Following Trump Election Win,” often accompanying such statements made online.
Snopes readers questioned if Hamas had indeed called for the end of war in Gaza. On X, posts cited Newsweek’s headline as proof that Trump had brought peace between Israeli and Palestine “within 24 hours” after becoming President.
Trump Jr. shared this headline and commented on it saying it is spectacular that Hamas called for peace just 12 hours after Trump won election! Trump may only just have become President yet but already making headlines! Spectacular!”
On Nov. 6, two days after Trump was elected president, Hamas spokesperson Basem Naim made a statement regarding Israel-Hammas conflicts to Newsweek – however Trump supporters misconstrued his words as calling for an end of hostilities when in reality Naim demanded an end to Israeli “aggression against our people, particularly Gaza”, as well as what he described as US support of Israeli settlements and activities in that regard.
Naim’s full statement to Newsweek read as follows (our emphasis):
Americans can judge for themselves who will become president next month, but Palestinians expect him to implement policy which brings immediate ceasefire from all forms of aggression against our people, particularly Gaza, as well as assistance in realizing their legitimate rights of freedom, independence, and the establishment of their independent self-sovereign state with Jerusalem as its capital […] Blind support for “Israel”, with its fascist government which disregards both our future as well as regional stability must end immediately […].
Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri recently told Reuters he urged Donald Trump to learn from former Vice-President Joe Biden’s mistakes and would put Trump through tests over whether his claims to end the conflict within hours upon taking office will hold true – especially as Inauguration Day won’t occur until 2025!
Hamas’ November 2024 statement to the media wasn’t the first or likely last call from them for an end to hostilities; earlier statements made during January and May of that year offered cease-fire deals or hostage exchange agreements to Israel in an effort to end hostilities; both sides blame one another for failing to come to an agreement.
Hamas released another statement following the U.S. elections which stated their position towards any new US administration is dependent upon its actions towards Palestinian people, their legitimate rights and just cause.” Furthermore, they insisted the new president listen to voices within American society opposing aggression towards Gaza; furthermore they must understand our people are standing firm against occupation while rejecting paths which compromise or diminish rights;
Donald Trump’s election win had no immediate, discernible effect on Israel’s ongoing attacks against Gaza and Lebanon. On November 6, Israeli airstrikes killed at least 40 people in eastern Lebanon while an attack on a house in Gaza claimed 15 Palestinian lives; on November 7, Israeli bombs struck again, striking at both Rafah City in south Gaza as well as refugee camps located north and south, killing over 12 individuals respectively.
Hezbollah claims it targeted an Israeli military base near Tel Aviv with drones from Lebanon, though no reports were immediately forthcoming on any casualties or damage. Israel recently expanded their offensive into northern Gaza and acknowledged systematically expelling residents – without recourse or aid going north; human-right experts have condemned these tactics as war crimes of forcible transfer and the use of food as weapons (source).
