Leona Maguire made history on the Ladies European Tour when she made an astonishing eagle on the final hole at Centurion Club for Aramco Team Series held there to become first Irishwoman ever to triumph on that tour.
Solheim Cup star Lydia Ko led from day one at Hertfordshire venue after rounds 66 and 72 put her at -8 and placed her atop of leaderboard.
Maguire had an eventful final round. She made the turn in two-over par and found herself locked at even on 18 with just an eagle needed for victory.
After driving just short of a fairway bunker on the par-five final hole, she hit an outstanding second shot using a hybrid to five feet for an eagle putt that she confidently made to claim history and take home eight under-par at this LET tournament.
“Today was hard work for me,” Maguire stated. “I played poorly; my caddie Dermot kept telling me to remain patient until on 18 he said to me ‘let’s hit shot of year here’ – which turned out perfectly, making use of hybrid clubs yet again!”
“Knowing Alison [Lee] would make her charge, I set myself the goal of finishing at 10-under par – something which seemed daunting at times! However, after keeping calm when things weren’t going my way and waiting patiently for things to turn around on 18, finishing strong was certainly rewarding and makes an excellent start to this part of the season.”
Speaking about her 18th hole eagle putt, she noted: “I just tried my hardest! It felt a bit like winning the Solheim Cup; no Irishwoman had ever won on LET before; so this putt meant so much more for myself, my family, and Ireland; what an unforgettable feeling!”
Maguire prepared her second shot into 18 at Centurion Golf Course that resulted in an eagle victory at Centurion and ultimately took home first prize for tournament winning eagle at her second attempt.
Maria Hernandez of Spain secured second place with seven under par after an outstanding final round 68 free from any bogeys, featuring birdies on holes one, five, ten 16 and 18. To finish in top 10 once again on LET in 2024!
Ireland’s Lauren Walsh tied with America’s Alison Lee and England’s Georgia Hall to share third place with each finishing on six under par.
Team Event Reaches Play-off
In the team competition, France’s Nastasia Nadaud edged out England’s Georgia Hall for victory following a three-hole playoff at the end of each day’s play – captains Nastasia Nadaud and Georgia Hall went head to head in battle royale until one team claimed its championship title on 18th tee.
Both players were successful on their opening playoff holes, notching an eagle on one and birdieing another before Nadaud made her shot on third playoff hole to ensure victory for her team.
“I don’t even know how I managed it! I was so nervous on the first tee!” declared Nadaud, still just 17-years-old. “I was terrified I wouldn’t hit the ball; my nerves were frazzled to say the least; and my hands were shaking so badly!”
Kristyna Napoleaova of Czechia was an outstanding winning captain at last year’s Hong Kong championship and explained: “We were super nervous on the sidelines but absolutely amazing to witness both Nas Nadaud and Georgia Hall play incredible golf – everyone enjoyed watching their playoff match – it was such fun watching all three teams go head to head in what turned into an unbelievable battle between three incredible golfers from those positions with amazing golf skills – congratulations both teams!”
Amateur George Brooksbank added, “It has been amazing playing and watching with these fantastic golfers; every time Nastasia held her putter I knew she’d putt it into the hole – what an experience!” It has truly been amazing being here!
