Gory Indian action film Kill is opening wide this weekend via Roadside Attractions on 827 screens across North America for Roadside Attractions’ inaugural venture into Indian film distribution – something two pictures that hit top 10 charts did last week! Amidst such competition are numerous indies such as Mother Couch and The Nature of Love debuting alongside them; both debuting to rave reviews here as well.

Kill isn’t your traditional Bollywood flick; with just over two hours and no song-and-dance numbers interspersing the action scenes. Premiering at Toronto Film Festival’s Midnight Madness section and subsequent screenings at Fantastic Fest and Beyond Fest and most recently Tribeca last month.

Roadside was heavily involved with marketing the R-rated film to both India’s diaspora audience – most prominently at the inaugural Cricket T20 World Cup held here and won by India – as well as to an action thriller audience.

Lionsgate (part owner of Roadside), along with John Wick franchise production company 87Eleven Entertainment have expressed great enthusiasm about making an English remake of Roadside Rex.

Kill opened on Thursday to excellent reviews (91% on Rotten Tomatoes) in America and will make its Indian premiere today, often giving box office an unexpected boost here.

Film Movement’s surreal family drama Mother Couch from writer/director Niclas Larsson makes its U.S. premiere today at Angelika Film Center and expands next Friday, with star cast including Ewan McGregor, Rhys Ifans Taylor Russell Ellen Burstyn Lara Flynn Boyle at TIFF as buzz generated for this TIFF debut film. Larsson made waves following Vatten which won Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at Gothenburg International Film Festival and his short series Magic Diner featuring Alicia Vikander which garnered millions of online views before Vatten premiered during TIFF; which became buzzworthy post its TIFF debut and expanded next Friday for wider release at various cinematic sites nationwide.

McGregor, Ifans and Boyle play befuddled adult children of an eccentric mother (Burstyn), who takes up residence on a couch at a furniture store that they refuse to leave. It’s the opposite of Ikea (a Swedish export), creepy, overcrowded and ugly — similarity being that the furniture pieces are set up like small stages; something McGregor himself joked “it wasn’t much different than Ikea itself!” He found casting quite easy due to his background in theater; cast loved the script and vision for these characters as was noted above “but it couldn’t compare”; McGregor played Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars prequel trilogy prequel trilogy prequel trilogy prequel trilogy prequel trilogy prequel trilogy role as Obi-Wan Kenobi (starring alongside McGregor himself), playing Obi-Wan Kenobi played by McGregor himself (played by McGregor himself playing Obi-Wan Kenobi in prequel trilogy films prequel trilogy prequel trilogy).

Deadline Reviews were favorable but overall reviews have been mixed. Larsson acknowledges it may not appeal to everyone; rather it explores “how we perceive reality when going through trauma”. Furthermore he pushes against what he perceives to be an obsession “that everything must be real. After all, most of us dream at night and consider that very real.”

“Let your audience think that everything they see is real, then gradually alter it over time.

“Jack Nicholson in The Shining can also be quite humorous at times,” according to him.

Music Box Films presents The Nature of Love at IFC Center (100% with Rotten Tomato critics). Directed and starring Monia Chokri (A Brother’s Love, The Babysitter), this French-Canadian romantic comedy premiered at Cannes 2023 as Un Certain Regard and then won Centerpiece awards in Toronto and France 2024 (beating out Oppenheimer by one vote; accepting her award, Chokri had to apologize to Nolan). It went on to win France’s Cesar award as Best Foreign Film 2024 as well (beating out Nolan when accepting his win accepted his Cesar award by accepting her apology while accepting her award while accepting hers)!). Additionally France gave Cesar award of 2024 which Chokri said in accepting his win that she said to Oppenheimer at least.)

Magalie Lepine-Blondeau stars as Magalie Lepine-Blondeau, an academic married at forty who begins questioning her values after developing an intimate romance with Pierre-Yves Cardinal’s contractor hired to fix up their country home. Cardinal provides the visual style reminiscent of 1970s and ’80s American filmmaking that lends the film its nostalgic, tongue-in-cheek edge.

Laemmle Royal in Los Angeles will open on July 12, followed by national expansion plans.

Holdovers: Kinds of Kindness from Searchlight Pictures by Yorgos Lanthimos starring Emma Stone has expanded to over 900 screens; Magnolia Pictures’ Thelma by Josh Margolin featuring June Squibb has seen its screen count decrease slightly to 629; June Zero by Jake Paltrow from Cohen Media Group now hits L.A. and top 10 markets as well.
