True, searching “where can I vote for Harris” did bring up a map display but not so with “where can I vote for Trump.”
What Is False
According to Google, their map wasn’t activated by “Harris,” the surname of candidate or candidate supporter, but by Harris County in Georgia or Texas; their special functionality operated according to users entering names recognized as U.S. cities, counties or states by them search engine (unlike “Harris”, for which no recognition could be found for “Trump”).
Rumors were swirling on Election Day 2024 that Google displayed an interactive voting map when users typed a search query containing U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris’ last name but not that of former President Donald Trump’s last name – though such reports never materialized.
Example: DogeDesigner, which boasts nearly 955,000 followers on Instagram, posted a screen-capture video illustrating discrepancies between searches for “where can I vote for Harris” versus those for “where can I vote for Trump.”
Archive user posts from Google Reader read, in part: “BREAKING: Google shows ‘Where to Vote’ section with map for Kamala Harris but not Donald Trump; Google is the biggest corporate donor to the Democratic Party.” As of writing (archive), over 18.5 million views had been recorded for this post (although according to OpenSecrets.org it did not appear to be so).
Elon Musk fueled speculation by reposting DogeDesigner’s post, asking “Are others seeing this too?”. Musk’s repost generated 17.2 million additional views.

However, the truth was less mysterious than might appear at first glance: Google search results displayed this map based on users entering what the engine recognized as being queries for city, county and state names like Harris (two Georgia counties and Texas). Trump does not appear anywhere as either name; no location exists for him according to SimpleMaps.com or similar sources.
Google offered clarity through their official X account News from Google (@NewsFromGoogle), explaining that searches using the name of U.S. Sen. JD Vance as Trump’s running mate produced results similar to Harris. Google stated: “The where to vote’ panel may also appear during searches using Vance as it shares his name with one or more counties in Texas – fix is coming, however very few people actually search this way!”

Once our searches verified that searching “Harris” produced a map while Trump did not, we conducted another query with Jill Stein’s surname as expected – as no cities or counties are named in her honor – it produced no map either; similarly a search using Robert F Kennedy Jr’s surname also did not produce one despite him having four locations named in his honor in Alabama, California, Minnesota and New York; an interesting counterexample being Robert F Kennedy Jr’s being the name of four towns or census-designated places named Robert F Kennedy Jr being named by four states with 4 towns/census-designations places).
