David Goffin spent seven consecutive years (2014-20) finishing in the Top 25 of ATP rankings from 2014-20. Unfortunately, injuries brought on by age have taken their toll more recently on him and in 2021 his season came to a premature close after suffering knee trauma at US Open. Goffin had reached the Top 20 by August 2011 but has since fallen back into non-Completer status and spent considerable amounts of time outside the Top 100 during these past two seasons. Goffin returned to the rankings in June and hasn’t looked back since! After reaching the round of 16 at Shanghai, he is poised to return to the Top 60 ranking – an indicator of just how well his current play. At 33 years old, it speaks volumes. “These last few months have been amazing; some great victories,” Goffin stated after defeating American Marcos Giron in three sets on Tuesday. “Mentally I feel stronger every week since, from spring and early summer. “I am extremely satisfied with how my play has improved over the last month or two and coming back into good draws in big tournaments. Everything seems to be running smoothly so hopefully everything stays the same for a while longer!” “Storied Success from Monfils and Dimitrov Goffin is drawn to touring as inspiration by seeing his fellow thirty somethings reach success on tour – specifically Gael Monfils and Grigor Dimitrov who serve as examples.” “Gael and Grigor were an inspiration,” Goffin stated, noting the pair both suffered injuries before going on to win tournaments such as Lamon’s 12th career title at Stockholm last year and become oldest champion ever at 25. Meanwhile, Grigor Dimitrov seems like someone Goffin could look up to. Seven years ago when they met for the title match at the ATP Finals in London, both players had experienced stellar seasons on tour.Dimitrov made his comeback this season after dropping from April 2018’s Top 10, returning to it midway through 2024 and reaching Grand Slam quarterfinals when reaching Roland-Garros last eight for only his 14th appearance – including making history by becoming only player ever to make Grand Slam quarterfinals 14 times consecutively on 14 visits there! “Grigor played an outstanding year!” Goffin raved “From starting from Shanghai last year then Final in Paris then coming back into Top 10, all while maintaining his Top 10 status”.Dimitrov has come full circle since April 2018’s title match when both had reached Top 10, returning from which he dropped after 14 appearances at Roland-Garros reaching last eight of Grand Slam quarter finals every time and again reaching then returning into Top 10. “He came back into Top 10, becoming Top 10, reaching last eight on 14 visits back into Top 10. He came back into Top 10, too”. Goffin raved. “Grigor played amazing all year,” Goffin exclaimed; adding, “he started from [at Shanghai last year in Paris final in Paris and now comes back into Top 10. He is back into top 10, having returned into Top 10, returning back into Top 10, his former spot and achieved career Grand Slam quarter final and returned back into Top 10, returning into Roland-Garros; becoming Grand Slam quarter final on 14 attempts when reaching last 8.” Goffin then back completing Grand Slam quarters this time (Grand) then back within [R], having returned into Top 10, starting back up until finally came back res he said Goffin about Dimitrov has played amazing year]. “To see him back in the Top 10, especially after we faced off against Grigor in 2017 was quite incredible for me and is really quite incredible to witness now,” stated Williamson at Rolex Shanghai Masters (@SH_RolexMasters). “Goffin and Dimitrov have both returned from injury as players to try their luck at breaking back in. Both men are alive in lower half draws in Shanghai.” Bulgaria’s Jakub Mensik takes on Czech Jakub Goffin while Goffin faces No.2-seeded Alexander Zverev of Bulgaria in round 16. Goffin made an early debut back into hard court Masters 1000 competition this week when he defeated Lorenzo Musetti for his first Top 20 win since 2022! Goffin doesn’t know exactly where his form will lead him, but is feeling fit and eager to explore all possible avenues. “I don’t know if I will break back into the Top 10, but right now things seem promising; with some excellent tennis on show so we shall see,” stated Goffin at one point as former World No.7.
