Giants Could Consolidate Title Contender Status With Corbin Burnes Contract, according to MLB Rumors

Greg Fiume/Getty Images The San Francisco Giants entered their 2024-25 MLB offseason searching for something extra to ignite them, yet have already experienced two significant turning points: employing franchise icon Buster Posey as President of Baseball Operations and signing star shortstop Willy Adames via free agency. However, one more significant breakthrough may be needed before this team reaches their potential. And Posey and company appear to have taken steps toward making that goal come to fruition: according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, both San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays appear as favorites to sign four-time All-Star and Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes. According to Feinsand, both Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles are still in contention, although their rival teams do not appear as aggressive about pursuit of Burnes as San Francisco or Blue Jays may. Should San Francisco win Burnes in this sweepstake, Posey could reunite San Francisco into World Series contention once more just like it had during his long playing career – although, admittedly, things seemed dismal for San Francisco prior to entering winter training camp – it had grown stagnant rather quickly over the prior six weeks despite all their best intentions to bring Burnes here from another team altogether compared with previous seasons. Not that the Giants were bad per se; rather they were quite uninspiring (which may even be worse for their chances). Since their surprise 107-win breakout in 2021 (which unraveled during the Divisional Series), they won six less games than they lost. Furthermore, they never fell far enough out of contention at trade deadline time that it would make sense to abandon ship and recover long-term assets through trades. Yet they were far from in the running; instead they seemed stuck in neutral. Their standings didn’t move upward nor did any upward trajectory appear imminently. Things have already felt different under Posey; Adames credit him as “one of my main motivations” for coming here. Undoubtedly securing the richest contract in franchise history wasn’t hurting his chances, but it makes sense that someone with recent achievements as a player would connect well with those following in his footsteps. That Posey managed to establish such an immediate rapport with Adames speaks well of his chances at recruiting Burnes as a pitcher. Giants manager John Farrell already knows Burnes personally since their newly hired reliever spent three seasons together with Burnes at Milwaukee. Adames said at Thursday’s press conference: “I haven’t spoken with him yet but will definitely reach out after today.” “Obviously you want someone like him on your team; having people compete out there would only strengthen you further! A guy like that would make an amazing addition.” “Giants signing Burnes wouldn’t suddenly put them at the center of World Series conversations, but he should certainly be considered in them. Logan Webb must be joined with another star pitcher like Burnes at the forefront of their rotation if the Giants want any hope at winning it all in 2019. Over his last four seasons, Adames has amassed an incredible 2.94 ERA and 1.02 WHIP while striking out 858 batters across 757 innings pitched. Much like how they recently filled Matt Chapman’s spot with Adames as an offense-first center fielder. Adames may not boast accolades like Burnes does, but his 32 homer and 21 stolen base season proves otherwise. Should Adames and Burnes end this offseason as Giants teammates, their floor is sure to increase substantially. Next year could see their ceiling soar with successful development from Jung Hoo Lee, Heliot Ramos, Tyler Fitzgerald Kyle Harrison and Marco Luciano. Potential superstar prospect Bryce Eldridge may yet make his presence known at some point during this season, giving San Francisco legitimate reason to be hopeful regarding its outlook. Once Burnes signs, then San Francisco could play an influential role in next season’s World Series race.
