“Japanese Steph Curry” Makes Impactful NBA Debut for G League Unitedoriginally appeared on NBC Sports Bay AreaSANTA CRUZ — Steph Curry will never be replaced – neither now, nor ever in his legacy. Keisei Tominaga immediately made an impactful entrance at Kaiser Permanente Arena for Wednesday night’s G League Fall Invitational and it quickly became evident why his 6-foot-2 sharpshooting skills earned him the moniker “Japanese Steph Curry” or even more so “Samurai Steph”. Tominaga can let it fly, and his star qualities and showmanship cannot be overlooked. After sitting through most of the first quarter for newly formed G League United’s 99-81 win against Serbia’s BC Mega MIS, he wasted no time showing off his trademark 3-point shot.” Tominaga replicated Stephen Curry in every aspect on his inaugural shot attempt for the night, from motoring up, screen setting, 3-point stroke and motor-failing! He made himself unmissable. Tominaga set up a screen at the free throw line, disengaged it and found himself free from downtown – this looked familiar indeed, as Tominaga quickly shot a catch-and-shoot 3 from its motion position without hesitation or question. Tominaga expressed to NBC Sports Bay Area on Tuesday after United’s final practice prior to their inaugural game that she loved shooting basketball – not just 3-pointers but more broadly how opening up space can create opportunities to do just that. “I just like shooting,” she added. “Still learning the process, but that’s how I’m continually growing as an athlete.” This evaluation could only come from Tominaga because Stephen Curry is his favorite player ever. One man from Moriyama, Japan recalls seeing Stephen Curry play and taking notice. Not long afterwards he would become inspired to follow Golden State superstar Stephen Curry to their first championship since 40 years had past. What initially attracted the local to Curry was not just his propensity for 3-point shots but something deeper inside that attracted them both together: charisma. Tominaga admires Curry for his passion to play basketball, while this summer Tominaga signed an unprecedented multi-year shoe deal with Curry Brand making him their inaugural international athlete to wear their shoes – much to Tominaga’s excitement and surprise! “Curry is obviously also fond of Tominaga – just last June Tominaga became their inaugural international athlete signed to its ranks! And they couldn’t have been happier.” Tominaga never imagined his newfound reality would surpass anything he ever could have expected when watching Stephen Curry from around the globe. “This means so much to me; obviously he is my favorite player! I am delighted to join his brand team family.” “When I heard Steph had agreed with our commitment for her brand to sign with Minionaga’s team I was beyond delighted, excited. Her three threes in just his third game proved just the start to an outstanding run he will surely put forth over time and turn fans’ heads at each new turn!” “Minionaga began an outstanding rookie campaign on Wednesday with three threes en route to an impressive showing across several games – something not many newcomers could say before now. Tominaga scored 9 points during the second quarter on 3-for-4 shooting from 3-point distance; including an up-and-up reverse layup completed with his right hand! Additionally, two out of his three 3-point attempts were successful as Tominaga is adept at scoring from long range since early childhood. His father, Hiroyuki, stands nine inches taller. Hiroyuki played professional in Japan as a center. Tominaga found great satisfaction in Santa Cruz not with the threes he hit but rather his ability to drive to the basket, leading him to utilize his jab step beyond the arc as an offensive weapon. “I worked a lot on improving my right-handed stuff,” Tominaga noted after winning. “This summer was intense for my work in that field; so it is fantastic that it has paid off like this.” Tominaga showed his offensive prowess and demonstrated his skills as a catch-and-shoot threat off of both dribbling and traffic, scoring 12 points off of 17-and-half minutes off the bench, going 4 for 6 from the field and 3 of 5 3-point attempts en route to becoming a +10 overall contributor. “It was fun,” Tominaga noted afterward, noting the supportive crowd and how exciting it is to play in front of one. I enjoyed being back home. Next up for G League United are matches with BC Mega MIS on Friday in Santa Cruz before flying off to Singapore for the 2024 FIBA Intercontinental Cup; buckets and loud cheers will surely follow Tominaga like his idol has done from little Davidson College through to Bay Area basketball and world stages alike for over 20 years – be sure to subscribe and subscribe for updates via Dubs Talk Podcast by subscribing!
