Claim: Prior to the presidential election of November 5, 2024, FEMA officials directed relief workers not to visit houses with pro-Donald Trump signs displayed prominently in front yards. A rating was assigned of 3/5 stars
FEMA confirmed firing the employee who issued this directive; we could not independently determine how many households or staff received it.
On Nov. 8, 2024, conservative news outlet The Daily Wire conducted an investigation that claimed an official of U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) instructed hurricane response workers not to enter homes featuring signs supporting then presidential candidate Donald Trump in their front yards.

According to reports in The Daily Wire, FEMA declined to provide aid at at least 20 homes in Lake Placid, Florida following Hurricane Milton due to guidance. It stated this in their story.
FEMA supervisor Marn’i Washington issued instructions to workers as they canvassed Lake Placid, Florida looking for those eligible for federal aid – in both verbal and group chat messages seen by The Daily Wire – according to multiple government employees who spoke with The Daily Wire. This warning came both verbally and via group chat used by their relief team team – this according to internal messages seen by The Daily Wire.
Government employees told The Daily Wire that at least 20 homes displaying Trump signs or flags from end October to early November due to government guidance were disallowed from qualifying for FEMA assistance. Images shared with us show workers going around these houses with government system messages such as, ‘Trump sign no entry per leadership.
FEMA issued an official statement after our story published, verifying an employee had indeed told workers to avoid homes bearing pro-Trump signs, and that it had ultimately terminated her employment contract; consequently we rate this claim as true. FEMA administrator Deanne Criswell issued this statement:
FEMA employs over 22,000 employees that, each day, live up to its core values by helping disaster survivors both before, during, and after disasters – sometimes at great personal sacrifice. Recently however, one FEMA employee deviated from these values when she instructed her survivor assistance team not to visit houses with yard signs supporting President-elect Trump – something which goes against FEMA’s core principles that support people regardless of political affiliation; such behavior was deeply disgraceful.
As I make clear to all my employees and the American people, any type of behavior or actions which violate standards of conduct at FEMA will not be accepted, nor tolerated. People found breaking them will face appropriate retribution.
As part of our commitment to assist victims before, during, and after disasters, this employee was terminated immediately upon discovery, with all relevant records forwarded directly to the Office of Special Counsel pending resolution. I pledge to do my utmost best in making sure this never occurs again.
FEMA did not confirm where or why their employee was operating, how many homes had been affected, or whether instructions had been disseminated to workers. We reached out to FEMA in order to gain more details and will update this story if we receive new info from them.
According to The Daily Wire’s report, a supervisor issued guidance both verbally and via group chat in late October 2024 regarding any instructions related to Donald Trump that may have appeared supportive. These were later deleted soon thereafter; by Oct 30 2024 the employee had reversed these orders that appeared pro-Trump.
FEMA workers had been visiting Florida to assist residents affected by Hurricane Milton and Helene. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis described FEMA employees’ conduct as targeted discrimination; adding, “Biden-Harris administration may now be near its final days due to weaponized government by partisan activists within its bureaucracy.”!function(f,b,e,v,n,t,s).
