Democrats remain concerned over Biden's fitness to serve and do not find his TV interview satisfactory in assuaging these concerns.

President Joe Biden’s Friday evening TV interview did nothing to assuage growing calls within his own party for him to end his campaign following Donald Trump’s disappointing debate performance. On Saturday, Minnesota Representative Angie Craig became the fifth House Democrat to call for President Obama to step aside, with reports suggesting more House Dems may soon follow her lead. Vice-President Biden dismissed his debate performance as simply being another unfortunate episode and suggested only God can convince him otherwise; today he spent time relaxing at his family home before hosting two public events later on Sunday. No senior members of the party have called on President Donald Trump to step aside; but unease within Democrats can be felt across party lines. Polls indicate his lead over Vice President Joe Biden is widening, prompting fears he could win both elections as well as House and Senate majorities with ease if his election becomes President or Vice President. On Saturday, congresswoman Craig, running in Minnesota against Donald Trump in a competitive district election, told reporters she did not believe he could effectively campaign and win against Donald Trump. She noted her respect for President Biden’s decades-long service while calling for him to step aside as the Democratic nominee, saying there was simply too much at stake if another Trump presidency ensued. “This decision wasn’t taken lightly but there simply too much at risk here,” she stated in her statement. Minutes after Biden appeared on ABC, Texas congressman Lloyd Doggett — one of the first House Democrats to call on Biden to withdraw — spoke out on CNN that Biden must withdraw even more urgently than initially suggested. He asserted this need is even stronger now. He stressed the longer Mr. Biden waits before making a decision to withdraw, the harder it would be for another candidate who can face down Donald Trump to enter politics and defeat him. House Democrats including Illinois congressman Mike Quigley and Massachusetts lawmaker Seth Moulton joined Arizona lawmaker Raul Grijalva’s call on Wednesday for Biden to withdraw. Mr Biden refused in his interview to take and release public results of any cognitive tests in order to prove he is fit to serve another term, saying instead: “I take cognitive tests daily…I just keep going through.” “Everyday is my test – everything that I do [is a test].” Unfortunately, his reply failed to convince Democratic congresswoman Judy Chu of California who told news outlet Politico it was “unsettling and not particularly convincing”, adding: “So I will be closely following his progress especially during spontaneous situations”. Mr Biden and his team are aware of internal Democratic pressure to make an announcement regarding his candidacy within one week as reported by The Washington Post. Reports surfaced Friday that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of Texas scheduled a Sunday meeting of senior House Democrats to discuss Mr Biden’s candidacy for president, while Senator Mark Warner from Virginia is trying to form a group of Democratic senators and ask Biden not to run again, according to reports by The Washington Post. Mr Biden acknowledged that Warner “is the only one contemplating that,” with no other calls to step aside for him from supporters or allies of Mr Warner. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey issued a statement encouraging Mr Biden to carefully assess whether to remain the Democratic nominee in 2020; Massachusetts governor Healey released an open letter for her colleague encouraging the president “carefully evaluate whether to remain”. In an exclusive 22-minute primetime interview on Fox, however, Biden disproved any notion allies may ask him step down, proclaiming instead “it won’t happen”. Stephanopoulos quizzed President Biden on whether or not he believed anyone else could serve a second term as president and win this race, to which Biden responded, “There’s nobody more qualified than myself to serve another term in office or win this contest than me”. Mr Biden, scheduled to speak at an election rally in Pennsylvania this Sunday, thanked vice-president Kamala Harris during an ABC News interview for her support and thanked ABC News anchor Greta Van Susteren in particular. Though this event will focus on black culture and celebrating diversity, questions surrounding former Vice President Joe Biden’s candidacy as a presidential hopeful, as well as any possible rise of Kamala Harris to lead him, will inevitably surface. Ms Harris must strike a delicate balance between projecting unwavering support for her boss while tacitly showing she can hold down that job should his nomination unravel; something which she has successfully navigated over three years as his deputy: not overshadowing him too quickly nor seeming too eager for power.
