Danny Briere and John Tortorella Provide Reaction To Jett Luchanko Joining Flyers Roster: 'He Has Earned The Right To Stay"

There was one last point I want to make – that, with regards to our topic of ‘how can we ensure it remains affordable’?, is very relevant: the current system needs some serious revision work (beyond what has already been mentioned herein). So… when will be our turn? Danny Briere of the Philadelphia Flyers discussed their official signing of 18-year-old Jett Luchanko to their NHL roster, noting his impressive abilities that so impressed upper management but underscoring that development will remain their top priority. Briere admitted he wasn’t sure that Luchanko would make the squad right out of training camp but admits being surprised that Luchanko made such an immediate impactful statement about joining them as well. “He surprised everyone at training camp from day one.” Speed was something he immediately noticed about this player and noted. That was impressive enough; then watching him play and take note of all his little details that make up his game was absolutely dazzling – how he helped support everyone around him, making all their game better was truly impressive… “[Jett Luchanko’s] play, both defensively in the neutral zone and offensively supporting teammates while keeping plays alive was very impressive.” Sean Couturier (left) and Jett Luchanko (right). Megan DeRuchie-The Hockey NewsHe also noted that nothing is set in stone when it comes to how long Luchanko will remain on the team, noting that, just like any player on their squad, Luchanko must continue earning his spot each and every day he plays for them. As Briere stated, nothing can be guaranteed: “There’s nothing guaranteed.” “He may only stay for one day or the entire season… But we believe he deserves that right to start and remain with us,” stated Williamson, when discussing 18-year-old center Tyler Sack’s inclusion on their roster as it could potentially hasten and compromise his development. However, Sack dismissed such arguments, noting “speed may trump depth”. Briere noted the unpredictable path taken by teenage players when introduced into the NHL; some thrive, others don’t. He further indicated that Flyers will keep Luchanko under close evaluation while considering his development as their top priority. “We must consider his age, development and what’s most essential to us when creating Luchanko,” he stated. “That is something we constantly think about and discuss amongst ourselves – not only regarding points.” “This conversation doesn’t stop there!” he concluded. Points are obviously crucial, since they help your team win games when scoring goals or setting up plays… However, we will focus more on evaluating the full spectrum of your performance than just points alone. Danny Briere suggests there may be both advantages and drawbacks to including Luchanko on an NHL roster; some teenagers thrive while others do not. There’s “no clear path”, they are simply doing what they can do help ensure his success.” #LetsGoFlyers– Siobhan Nolan (@SGNolan), October 7, 2024John Tortorella acknowledged Luchanko deserves to be where he is right now; but when it came to assessing his game he declined to predict anything or look out for certain specific characteristics in him – instead opting for “letting him play and seeing where that takes me”. Tortorella also noted that all evaluations will consider Luchanko’s long-term development; she noted, for instance, if something doesn’t seem beneficial for his growth then these are decisions we will discuss regularly and make changes as needed. But we won’t overthink it and say, ‘Oh, he made a bad play there; now back [into OHL].” Instead, we will let him play freely while engaging him in discussions while playing games together and seeing where that leads us.
