Al-Nassr have set their sights on Croatia midfielder Mateo Kovacic for signing in the January transfer window with an attractive pay package worth more than $1 million per week, according to CBS Sports sources. Al-Nassr had planned on making Kovacic one of their marquee deadline day signings on Monday but were unable to shift Sadio Mane and clear international space needed by Cristiano Ronaldo who championed Kovacic’s acquisition, according to sources.
Saudi Arabia are currently considering signing free agent Adrien Rabiot and await interest from Turkiye for both Mane and Anderson Talisca. Riyadh does not currently have space on their roster to add another international player over 21. They would need to select from among eight foreign veterans as part of a strategy of recruiting international talent into their roster. Al-Nassr and Ronaldo see Kovacic as an asset that could transform their team, so Al Nassr intend to offer City an attractive offer when the transfer window reopens at the start of 2025. Sources close to the club indicate that on deadline day they would have offered one of the highest fees ever seen from a Saudi club. Al-Nassr had proposed providing City with not only an impressive fee but also offering Kovacic an estimated annual salary worth in the region of $65 Million; an amount six times what he currently makes.
