Betsi Cadwaladr Resigns After Devastating Report

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board’s Executive Director of Finance Sue Hill will formally resign her position at Betsi Cadwaladr in December after “deliberate” improper accounting was discovered two years ago in her department. Since December 2022 when specialist investigators were called in to inspect accounts at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB), Susan has been on leave of absence while specialist accounting investigators look through accounts in her department. Ms Hill informed the health board in September 2024 of her intention to resign; according to their annual report, an executive director of finance is paid an annual total salary and pension benefit package of PS195,000 including pension benefits. Llyr Gruffydd from Plaid Cymru’s Senedd (MS), was taken aback that Ms Hill still held her position two years after initially declaring it her intention to depart. “This shouldn’t have happened,” he stated, and said that more prompt action by health boards had to take place, both of which have special measures being implemented against them by Welsh governments. “The Welsh government should have ensured this situation had been dealt with more promptly and effectively.” Commenting on the ongoing investigation, Conservative MS Darren Millar noted the health board and Welsh government should have responded more promptly. “Many residents in north Wales will likely be shocked that almost two years have gone by since scandal broke and this health board went back into special measures – yet no one seems to have been held to account for any shortcomings,” stated Mr. Robertson. “This situation is unsatisfactory and the Welsh government bears responsibility, given that the health board remains under special measures supervision by them two months after Ms Hill began her leave of absence.” The health board told BBC Wales neither it nor Ms Hill were willing to comment further or respond to statements by Mr Gruffydd and Mr Millar. A Welsh government spokesperson advised: “This is an employment matter which falls within the purview of each health board.”
