Trades Could Occur Based on Need and Situation Dave Pagnotta of the Fourth Period was recently asked on SiriusXM NHL Network Radio with Steve Kouleas and Martin Biron about whether any further trades might occur before Christmas, to which Pagnotta answered no but there had been talk in recent months of possible transactions taking place before then. He indicated there may still be possibility for trades as Christmas approaches but did not rule it out completely; still there had been chatter regarding potential moves before then. NHLRumors.com Transcriptions NHL Rumors: Frustration But Not Panic Yet for the Nashville Predators Steve Kouleas reported on recent negotiations regarding what we discussed last week; specifically with regard to Timothy Liljegren who we also talked about then. “So there has been some minor back-room negotiations related to what was discussed last week involving Timothy Liljegren as I recall and you were on then? Do we have to wait for more accrued cap space to become available before trading takes place? Any chatter on this website has recently mentioned Provorov as someone they could potentially trade before Christmas (perhaps as early as January? ) is concerning me. But where are any potential trade fronts or anything like that happening prior to December 25? Dave Pagnotta: “Oh sure. When something like that occurs it quickly speeds up discussions or reinvigorates them; sometimes just seeing someone off of their board spurs others on to suggest more additions – here or there – or offers to make their move for them.” Are There More Situational Trades Coming I have no sense that any meaningful changes are imminent; I think it would likely require cap space to make any meaningful additions that make an impactful statement about their intentions for 2019-20. Nashville would need to make sure their finances can support any commitment, which means dollars out and dollars in are equalized across any deal that may come their way. Nashville does have cap space that they could play with; but until they find an ideal deal they won’t rush headlong into something. Not every team enjoys cap flexibility; Toronto must come up with something else here. Send someone through waivers or remove another body in the next week so as to be able to activate some players off LTIR that are ready, such as Connor Dewar and Jani Hakanpaa that were recently acquired by them. Certain teams must adapt based on the circumstances they find themselves in; Toronto recently shed Liljegren and Utah brought Olli Maatta onto their squads, for instance. Based on issues presented, they displayed them without Marino and Durzi for several months prior to signing any document stating such. NHL Rumors: New York Islanders Seeking Defensemen; Options Present There will always be talk, and everyone should explore all available options to them, but early in a season there can often be opportunities that arise out of injury concerns or cap restrictions that require quick decisions to make changes quickly and efficiently. As stated before, the Islanders would like to do something, but none of their injured players have season-ending ailments – Adam Pelech could miss four to six weeks while Mathew Barzal has six week ordeals ahead of him. Sooner or later, these players are going back, and making sure you have sufficient cap space is vitally important in terms of keeping their services. So it is not as straightforward as just using their space; although Lou and staff there would like to do something else that they have limited options available to them in these instances.
