The New York Jets have placed their offensive future in the hands of Justin Fields after two disappointing seasons with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback.
Fields arrived this offseason as a developmental project similar to Sam Darnold’s situation with Minnesota a year ago.
The opportunity faced a brief threat last Thursday when Fields was carted off the practice field with what initially appeared to be a serious toe injury.
Further evaluation revealed the issue was minor, but the scare highlighted just how crucial Fields has become to the Jets’ plans.
Speaking recently on Up & Adams, Fields discussed his mindset entering what could be a career-defining season.
“I have always been a hard worker, I think, in my sense. But, I haven’t won as much in the league, compared to the rest of my life. So, I think, that’s what the chip is. I just want to win, and that’s the biggest thing,” Fields told Kay Adams.
Justin Fields says the chip on his shoulder comes down to one thing:

The injury concern was particularly worrying given Fields’ reliance on mobility.
Toe injuries can severely limit a quarterback’s movement, and his game depends heavily on speed and athleticism.
After struggling in Chicago and serving as a backup in Pittsburgh behind Russell Wilson, Fields understands this Jets stint might represent his final chance to prove he belongs as a starter.
New York invested significantly in that belief.
The team signed Fields to a two-year deal worth $40 million with $30 million guaranteed.
Fields has reassured fans about his health status since the injury scare.
With training camp progressing and the regular season approaching, he faces the challenge of translating his natural talent into consistent winning football.
The Jets are betting their immediate future on his ability to do exactly that.
