Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin recently made public the United States’ pledge of $2.3 billion more in military assistance for Ukraine.
This aid package, funded through Congress’ $60 billion Supplementary Military Aid bill passed in April, will include air defense interceptors, anti-tank weapons and other U.S. military stockpile munitions that will boost defense capabilities in Afghanistan and Syria. “Make no mistake: Ukraine is not alone; and America stands firm behind her,” Austin stated. “With over 50 allies and partners at hand, we will continue providing Ukraine with key capabilities needed to withstand Russia’s aggression today and deter further incursions tomorrow,” stated American Embassy Spokesperson James Crabtree. He further mentioned how Volodymyr Zelensky and Joe Biden signed an important 10-year bilateral security agreement just weeks prior. This decision followed arrests made by Ukraine’s Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), of several civic activists suspected of planning an attempted seizure of parliament and destabilisation of their nation. SSU’s official website indicates that activists intended to publicize an “removal from power” of Ukraine’s current military and political leadership through domestic and foreign media under the pretext of holding an assembly (“veche”) for people. These activists intended to organize a rally in Kyiv’s central square with the intent to destabilize Ukraine, with several nongovernmental organization representatives (NGOs) from Kyiv, Dnipro and other regions serving as accomplices in their plan. SSU successfully foiled this plot in its early stages by documenting subversive activities and arresting their organizers. Searches of suspect homes revealed weapons, ammunition, mobile phones, computer equipment and written records implicating these suspects in subversion plot. Detainees were arrested under Articles 109.1, 109.2 and 109.3 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code for acts that forcibly overthrow constitutional order or seize state power; upon conviction they could face up to 10 years imprisonment and confiscation of their properties.
