Claim:
Tobey Maguire managed the “tray catch” scene without using special effects in “Spider-Man (2002)”. Shen Ratings:
One scene from Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst’s original “Spider-Man” movie that captured viewers was when Maguire, as Spider-Man, caught items off Dunst’s tray as it flew up in the air – this instant is beloved in cinema history!
Social media users have repeatedly claimed that no visual effects (VFX) were used during filming of this stunt, including one Reddit post with over 6,000 upvotes as of this writing stating, “Tobey Maguire really caught all that food on that tray – no CGI.” […]
Tobey Maguire played Tobey Maguire who actually caught and held onto Tobey Maguire the food tray scene from Spider Man: Homecoming without using CGI animation; in total this took him 156 attempts before succeeding! See related article “byu/DarthVader_2006 in interesting” for details of that topic.

Users of the iPhone X have made similar claims in March and June 2024; below you can view an interactive visual that showcases this scene in its entirety.
According to sources like Screen Geek, The Independent, BuzzFeed and Metro, this scene was indeed executed without using visual effects. According to The Independent’s DVD commentaries both Dykstra and Dunst stated in individual segments of each DVD commentary that Maguire played her part without special effects being employed in its creation.
John Dykstra — who served as head of visual effects in the original Star Wars flick — claimed, during commentary, that Tobey Maguire actually performed this scene without using CGI; “Not CGI by any stretch; that was all Tobey”, according to Dunst allegedly stated during commentary. They used glue-type tape on his hands in order to secure them to his tray for effect.
Though we have yet to independently confirm these accounts, one user on YouTube uploaded footage from a DVD commentary video:
We reached out to representatives for Maguire, Dunst and Dykstra as well as director Sam Raimi seeking confirmation; once received we will update this story. Our sources told us Maguire could possibly return from jail sometime later today .
