BBCAn NHS mobile lung-cancer screening clinic located in Gorton, Manchester. A lung-cancer screening program which uses mobile clinics to travel throughout English communities has identified lung cancer early in more than 5,000 individuals. Specially-adapted lorries have been visiting supermarkets, football grounds and town centres with high rates of lung cancer as part of an NHS initiative that was the biggest of its kind ever undertaken. Since it started operating, 5037 lung cancer cases were detected; 76% at their early stage stages. Experts estimate that early cancer detection increases chances of survival by nearly 20 times for five year survival, according to Phil Bennett’s case. His stage one lung cancer was detected following screening at a mobile screening clinic in Manchester, so Phil counts himself incredibly lucky that it was caught early enough. He now considers himself lucky. At first, he ignored a letter inviting him to one of the mobile clinics; having no symptoms nor time available due to work as an independent decorator he chose not to go ahead with it; when finally accepting their offer however it was discovered he was suffering from stage-one lung cancer. Early diagnosis made all the difference for him when it came to beating cancer, Mr Bennett says, adding, “Just go have yours done for peace of mind – or if treatment is required it will be immediately addressed,” and to not ignore anything similar that comes up like me! I was extremely fortunate! Don’t ignore this disease like I did.” When invited for medical screenings, don’t decline them without at least considering them thoroughly; doing so could save your life! Noticeable symptoms The programme targets 55-74 year-old current and past smokers between 55 to 74, providing health checks and, if necessary, scans. However, experts stress NHS staff are there only to offer assistance and advice – not lecture about smoking habits. Lung cancer rarely shows noticeable symptoms until its spread through other parts of the body has already taken place and accounts for approximately 35,000 deaths annually in Britain alone. symptoms could include:a longstanding cough that worsens gradually; persistent breathlessness or shortness of breath; fatigue or loss of energy or appetite, unexplained weight or appetite loss – anyone experiencing these should visit their GP immediately and consult Dr Haval Balata (consultant pulmonary physician at Wythenshawe Hospital); however even those missing their initial appointment at mobile clinic still have plenty of chances to be seen by him, said Wythenshawe Hospital’s Dr Haval Balata (consultant respiratory physician). “Life can be busy for everyone – but at our service center we do everything in our power to make life convenient and give people opportunities,” states President and Chief Operating Officer Daniel E. Woodley. The trucks typically stay here 12 hours each day with some weekends included as well. Plus when we visit an area we stay longer – not like two days like some services do.” “So if something comes up that prevents you from keeping an appointment, let us know as soon as possible and we will reschedule. Just call and give us your number!” Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation executive Paula Chadwick commented, stating it’s great that more lives continue to be saved with targeted lung health checks – and encouraged those invited by taking advantage of them.” Cancer Research UK chief executive Michelle Mitchell stated: “Expanding lung screening across England will allow more cancers to be caught early, while we hope targeted lung screening be implemented so more people can benefit from potentially life-saving checks. “
