Denver, Colo – Following Saturday’s 5-2 loss against Nashville Predators, Colorado Avalanche forwards Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon extended their season-opening point streaks to twelve games each and will both look to extend that record tonight against Edmonton Oilers. They both stand one game shy of equaling MacKinnon’s Avalanche record for longest season-opening point streak (13 games) set during 2019-20. Makar can match his previous season-long point streak during 2021-22 with one point tonight; Artturi Lehkonen makes her season debut tonight after recovering from off-season shoulder surgery rehabilitation. Lehkonen had been practicing with full contact in full practice jersey for some time and according to multiple press availabilities from Head Coach Jared Bednar was eagerly looking forward to getting back out there again. “It has been an extended recovery,” Lehkonen stated after practice on Monday afternoon. “Surgery was inevitable since I have been dealing with this since the 2023-24 playoffs began,” he stated, noting it’s “not ideal and would rather be playing”. But still – “I feel good now”. “Colorado Avalanche left-wing Artturi Lehkonen (62) reacts after missing his shot on goal in overtime period against Dallas Stars during game six of second round 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs at Ball Arena on April 2, 2024.By Ron Chenoy-Imagn ImagesLehkonen practiced on Monday alongside MacKinnon and Rantanen before likely sticking together during tonight’s contest; The Return of Valeri Nichushkin… Valeri Nichushkin had been cleared to practice alongside his teammates on Monday. He should return with both lines intact tonight against Dallas Stars.”The Return of Valeri Nichushkin…Forward Valeri Nichushkin has been cleared to practice alongside them this month after recovering from hip and shoulder injuries to practice alongside them – although some minor adjustments might need be made as his playing time decreases tonight due to game one being cancelled because if needed at some time between periods 3&4, 4&5, 6 and 7.4… Nichushkin could Make His Debut Tonight… He practiced alongside MacKinnon and Rantanen before appearing tonight against Dallas… In anticipation of Nichushkin…Forward Valeri Nichushkin returned for practice with them on Monday when cleared by medically cleared to practice with team. He looks ready and raring to return, and his teammates like Rantanen couldn’t be more eager for that day to arrive. “Obviously we need him,” Rantanen stated, without wanting to dwell too deeply into past happenings or any consequences associated with those decisions made previously. “Whatever has transpired – let it remain that. What matters now is having him on board for good. We need him. ” He’s an integral member of our team, an outstanding performer who will help us win more games together. After six months have lapsed, players can apply to reinstate themselves; following practice on Monday afternoon, Bednar confirmed with reporters that November 15th could be set as Nichushkin’s return date. On that date, Colorado will host Washington Capitals at home for their season debuts. Jonathan Drouin Is Close To ReturningJared Bednar addressed media after morning skate on Tuesday; in addition to providing confirmation regarding Lehkonen’s season debut date and Jonathan Drouin’s status he responded that Drouin “is close.” “I don’t know which game it will be yet, but he seems close. Bednar noted, “He’s feeling better each day” when speaking of Jonathan Drouin who sustained an injury against Vegas Golden Knights during Colorado’s season opener on October 19th and has not returned since being placed on injured reserve on October 20th. Recently however he has been skating with teammates while wearing an uncontact jersey and appears more optimistic each day. Bednar mentioned during postgame availability last week that Drouin was still experiencing discomfort but should return soon enough to play. Tonite’s Match Up With Postseason RivalsThe Colorado Avalanche are looking for their fourth win tonight after dropping three straight contests. Artturi Lehkonen will return to the lineup and Justus Annunen is expected to serve as goaltender, while Oliver Bjorkstrand may take an indefinite absence, making way for Colorado Kraken after being shut out on Sunday by Boston Bruins. The Kraken will look for victory as they strive to avenge that loss.
