Tyronn Lue’s job as coach of the Clippers requires more of him at times than just coaching skills alone. Due to having six new players join his roster this season, Lue has found himself filling more of an educational role this time around. Lue, who boasts six players 25 or younger on his team, was understandably excited and inspired after spending nearly one week training camping and competing against Golden State Warriors preseason game in Hawaii. Returning home for practice Monday at Intuit Dome. For Lue it has been both exhilarating and fulfilling in terms of his teaching responsibilities. “I love it,” Lue said of coaching newcomers to his program, including young and inexperienced players alike. Lue found himself teaching these players the ropes; newcomers needed help understanding spacing, offensive execution strategies and options available – something Lue enjoys doing himself. Overall, “it has been fantastic.” “Lue has acquired Cam Christie, 19, out of Minnesota via the second round in this year’s draft. Kobe Brown, 24, in his second season and still learning, continues to develop with each season that passes. Lue enjoys mentoring younger players like Kobe during training camp and preseason matches – Oceanside will play against Brooklyn Nets Tuesday evening! Lue noted, “My most significant challenge has been myself. Making sure we move at an appropriate speed while simultaneously understanding each concept before progressing to the next stage has been my responsibility; recently we added lots of material so they may grasp it faster now. If this occurs, we slow down and continue coming in before shooting around before practices so the players can get up-to-speed quickly. “When Luke Lue deploys new schemes onto his team, it is vital that newcomers grasp them immediately. To this end, they acquired players such as Derrick Jones Jr., Kris Dunn, Kevin Porter Jr. and Mo Bamba as fill-in players for Kawhi Leonard and James Harden.” Lue stated, “If they’re not getting it, I can’t keep pushing,” so instead he has made sure if necessary to pull back if necessary and come in an hour early so as to work on it together before practice begins; they have done well so far with that aspect. “Lue has taken on an unfamiliar role since overseeing one of the oldest rosters in the NBA last season with an average age of 30.4. His four future Hall-of-Famers — Leonard (33), Paul George (34), Harden (35) and Russell Westbrook (35) were all over 32 last season, which meant Lue didn’t need to do as much teaching with this veteran group. Yet they trusted Lue enough that they made him one of the highest paid coaches in the NBA at $14 Million per season. “Whatever it takes,” Lue said, “is that we make sure our staff knows which personnel fits with what side of the ball they want. No one player should experience my system; my system remains intact regardless of who plays for us. “Teaching styles must vary based on who’s on the floor and that is something we are skilled at doing,” Lue stated with pride when asked what type of teacher he was — one with or without patience? Lue replied confidently by smiling: “Not at all; patience must always be displayed when working with groups. One can’t afford to get frustrated; my guys are picking things up nicely. So my approach has always been teaching; making sure we’re in our proper spots, explaining why certain actions must occur here or elsewhere and showing why setting screens here rather than there may be necessary or why passing must take place here rather than elsewhere is necessary. “Tucker’s SituationLue reiterated that his decision was part of a mutual understanding between himself, P.J. Tucker and the Clippers organization. Tucker requested to remain out until another situation can be established for him. Tucker signed his $11.5-million deal last season after joining Harden from Philadelphia via trade with Bones Hyland; both players were sent home prior to last season’s All-Star break by P.J. Clippers management.” P.J. is not listed among their roster players for now.” “Today was great for us,” Lue said, adding, “and especially so for our young guys. We came to an understanding, though some might view today as less-than-ideal; nonetheless it happens every day. “Etc.Lue responded in the affirmative when asked by media if Leonard, who is suffering from inflammation in his right knee, continued strengthening it while the team practiced. Lue announced Terance Mann will start against the Nets. Subscribe to L.A.
