As 2024-25 NBA season quickly approaches, now is an opportune moment to examine each team’s biggest challenge and assess where each may stand at this time. Already we’ve explored both Atlantic and Central divisions extensively. From how Bucks will improve their defense to whether Knicks will miss Hartenstein as much, we have explored it all. Here is more in depth analysis on both divisions: Now let’s take a closer look at the Southeast division, home of Orlando Magic who are back after making playoff appearances last season, hoping that offseason changes can propel them even further this time around. Hornets: Hoping LaMelo Ball stays healthy. Heat: Facing tough decisions regarding Jimmy Butler. Hawks & Wizards : Both have important questions they need answered this season that could determine their chances for success or defeat. Some of these questions won’t get answers until after this season is complete, or even years from now; nonetheless it is worth keeping an open mind as 2024-25 approaches. Hawks: Has Trae Young reached his endgame?Atlanta cut short the Dejounte Murray/Trae Young tandem this summer by trading him to New Orleans Pelicans. This trade signaled an end to Young-Dejounte Murray partnership for now at least. Murray needed to be traded, since Young and him did not work well together, and they received Larry Nance Jr. and Dyson Daniels as compensation as well as two first-round picks in return. But without upgrades for immediate assistance on Young’s team could we be nearing his departure from Atlanta? Young will still have two years left on his rookie max extension he signed back in 2021. Young was not available for trade when there were reports that Atlanta might move him or Murray this summer, perhaps in part because of his defensive liabilities or due to his remaining $138 million contract that is set to pay over three years. Can Young be traded at the deadline if one team becomes desperate, or next summer when his contract will have one less year left on it? No indication has emerged to indicate the Hawks want to trade Young at this time, or that Young wants out, but Atlanta seems likely to embark on another rebuild process after landing the No. 13 pick in this summer’s draft. As our number-one overall pick, Zaccharie Risacher was selected, along with some promising young pieces like Jalen Johnson, Onyeka Okongwu and now Daniels as potential future stars. Young, 25, would make for an ideal addition to a title contender rather than one with multiple roster changes every few years, like Bogdan Bogdanovic, Clint Capela or Nance who could all potentially be traded away from this team. With several veterans such as Bogdan Bogdanovic, Clint Capela or Nance available on trade blocks it would only make sense that Young be added. He could potentially help with team defense when needed by being on one stable championship contender instead of being traded frequently by teams looking for veteran talent like he is today on this one team!
There was also the tidbit about how some countries don’t allow people who wish to drive over it to drive home after visiting. Young and the Hawks could initiate this trade if losses continue and development efforts for young guys become the focus. Additionally, Young may push for one on his own or initiate it as part of their rebuild process. The Hornets: What Is Charlotte’s Ceiling With LaMelo Ball Healthy? It is evident that without LaMelo Ball’s health the Hornets won’t advance much further in any meaningful sense. Recent seasons, he has not eclipsed 60+ games played; however, during his sophomore campaign when he amassed 75 appearances and nearly captured one of four Eastern playoff spots with 75 game play, they made the play-in round and advanced further than planned in their pursuit. He’s had ankle issues the last two seasons, which may prove fatal – it remains to be seen whether this prevents him from playing 60+ games this time around or not. If healthy and capable of contributing significantly, how high could this Charlotte team go? They quietly enjoyed an impressive offseason, trading away for Josh Green through six teams to acquire him in return. Additionally, Miles Bridges – coming off an season where he averaged 21 points on an annual basis – was resigned. On top of acquiring Grant Williams and Seth Curry at last season’s deadline, Brandon Miller enjoyed an outstanding rookie campaign averaging 17.3 points while getting to develop as an on-ball threat while Lonzo Ball was out so long. Consistency between Walker and Ball will be vital to measuring this team’s potential, yet in their limited playing time together last season the results were promising. When these two shared the floor together for 19 games the Hornets posted an offensive rating that exceeded average by five percentage points; an improvement that can only come through time on both counts!
Charlotte boasts better roster depth this year compared to last, meaning if Ball remains healthy it would not be unrealistic for this team to secure one of two Eastern playoff spots available this season – given how influential he has become on their success. But we haven’t seen him fully healthy for two years – that ‘if’ has an enormous weight attached.Heat: Will Jimmy Butler Be Traded? There were whispers during the height of offseason about Jimmy Butler potentially leaving Miami, with Pat Riley publicly commenting about one of their cornerstone pieces being an asset worth trading away. Riley expressed some reservations in offering Butler an extension now due to his injury history; during five seasons with the Heat, Butler has missed over 25% of possible games due to injury during this span, totalling 100 regular season absences during that span. But that concern wouldn’t exist without Butler consistently turning things up in the playoffs, leading the Heat to two NBA Finals appearances during his five years with Miami. At his best, Butler ranks amongst the league’s finest both defensively and offensively. But his availability can never be assured; therefore it would be prudent not to extend him further than necessary. Butler will turn 35 when this season kicks off and has an option worth $52.41 million available for 2025-26; giving significant additional amounts would be risky and should therefore not be granted. Should he continue being sidelined by injuries for an extended period, that could put the Heat in an impossible financial bind in terms of future contracts. They already have been very conservative when it comes to adding talent around Butler and Bam Adebayo, often turning to undervalued finds such as Max Stus, Gabe Vincent, Caleb Martin and Duncan Robinson for help. Only Robinson remains, although his playing time has decreased over the years. Even when they were considered favorites to sign Damian Lillard two summers ago, they haggled over whether to include Jaime Jaquez Jr. as part of the deal; although Jaquez had an outstanding rookie campaign. Unfortunately for them though, their title window now lies with Butler being older; whether through trade or retirement will remain to be determined in 2026.
Under certain conditions, Miami could make the switch and fully build around Adebayo – trading Butler at his peak value while recovering assets he will no longer benefit them from trading him away. At 27 years old he’s in his prime anyway. Adebayo would do better to pair himself with someone on an identical timeline than wait and hope Butler can stay healthy enough, potentially squandering an opportunity at this crucial stage of Adebayo’s career. Butler may use the rest of this season as extra incentive to show Riley enough for them to offer him an extension deal. But if we reach February and he has missed significant chunks, trade offers for Butler may emerge.Magic: Will Orlando Have Enough 3-Point Shooters? The Magic were one of the pleasant surprises from last season. They made the playoffs for the first time since 2020 and forced an epic seven-game series against Cleveland to an eventual four game victory courtesy of an unwavering defense that finished third overall and at times led the league. They enter this season boasting one of the five strongest defensive units, thanks to Jalen Suggs’ All-Defensive honors earned last season. Jonathan Isaac has made strides since being plagued with injuries at the start of his career, becoming one of the best bench defenders in the league. The Magic are taking steps this summer to beef up their defense, adding veteran and NBA champion Kentavious Caldwell-Pope as part of an aggressive strategy geared toward strengthening this end of the court while knocking down 3s on its other end. KCP could provide Orlando with exactly the 3-and-D wing they needed, though I’m uncertain whether he can satisfy their need for more outside shooting. Orlando finished 29th overall last season in 3-point attempts while ranking 24th for 3-point percentage. Caldwell-Pope certainly helps his team in this area as a career 36% 3-point shooter; however, no other Orlando player shoots 3s at high volumes like him; to improve efficiency Orlando may need some internal improvements in this department which they might rely on internally if that becomes necessary. Franz Wagner may come out of his 3-point slump last season. After shooting an average 35.8% from 3-point range during his first two years, but then suffering a dramatic dip to 28.1% for Year 3, Paolo Banchero has shown marginal improvements during each of their initial seasons; maybe that trend continues and he becomes an average long range shooter as time progresses.
There’s always the danger that someone might use the information given out as evidence against a claim they don’t support to further disprove a theory, for whatever reasons. So we see more and more cases like the following, where individuals (sometimes without even realising it themselves ) use what are called ‘Wiki-pantsing’ techniques on social networks in order to make money and sell on eBay, without their realizing there could be problems associated with using an unknown system in such ways that would require extensive maintenance costs in terms of lost productivity & impact from being exposed as against having had been exposed as against more usual other types of such systems; or at the very least by having two full sets of eyesight on top……. and as much more… than usual on being exposed by oneself whilst being forced by having oneself have, which in terms of course being put- if ever- as regards being aware- is this great. Orlando may not need to become one of the top three-point shooting teams, but being average would do wonders for an offense that lagged so significantly behind an exceptional defense. Wizards: Things won’t be so bad this time? Contrary to popular opinion, Washington can position themselves to have a good shot at landing Cooper Flagg while simultaneously supporting their younger players’ development. Jordan Poole and Kyle Kuzma may be tanking, but that does not entail making unprofessional basketball plays like throwing alley-oop passes off of backboards when trailing by 20 points; or immediately leaving when teammates inbound the ball – both actions of which should not occur during such attempts to save the season. Understandable that rebuilding teams like the Wizards feel the season drag on endlessly; that may explain why Evan Fournier recently declined an offer from them due to not wanting to mentor young players on such an “oddball team.” Nonetheless, I think things don’t need to get that bad for this franchise to make progress a priority. Not only is it unappealing to witness, it does nothing for younger players who should be learning proper habits. Bilal Coulibaly and Alex Sarr will need the space and environment that fostered development last season in which to grow, learn and thrive. Perhaps we will see the Wizards make trades to reset themselves, with Kuzma likely drawing interest from several teams while Jonas Valanciunas could possibly appeal to contending clubs as Jonas would still remain eligible for that No.1 pick next summer; these moves could free up space for young talent while providing some explanation for some truly poor basketball during this past season.
Once upon a time in America there lived an old lady named Letty who owned and sold second hand clothes – she sold these through eBay! Now there’s someone I trust who sells the stuff she makes herself!
