As of today (Wed May 8th 2016, 11:43 am ), Missouri doesn’t yet support TurboTax 2024 on CD. I hope someone identifies why.? Post by Gryphon >> Thu Sep 5, 2024 1:49 pm.
Just received this email from Intuit confirming they’ve finally abandoned physical media:

TurboTax Desktop customers, we have some important updates regarding TurboTax Desktop products for tax year 2024 and beyond. Starting this tax season, TurboTax Desktop products will only be offered as download products; no CD format options will remain. Download products are still readily available via select retailers or directly through TurboTax.com with instructions provided to access, download and install. Rest assured, TurboTax will still operate exactly the same as before with download products becoming available beginning early November.

2018 appears to have been my final purchase on CD, so it does not concern me at all.

Since 2003 or 2004, I’ve preferred online filing of taxes in favor of giving them access to my data.

TurboTax’s only real advantage to me is remembering my information from last year and saving time; therefore switching to its online version (which would not pull information from last year’s desktop return) would have been foolish. Instead I may give Direct File another try next year if its capabilities have expanded enough; that would allow me to finally do away with Intuit completely!

As an alternative, I have used H&R Block for years – at first requesting a CD but instead using their download install option; ever since then it’s all been download-only with zero issues. Although they email a registration key, recently this key self propagated during download install. Download link + token are different than product key; I always purchase them through NewEgg during their Thanksgiving sale, usually receiving both within minutes as well as being mentioned on their order acknowledgement screen.

Yes, this means you can still access the desktop version, but must download an installer file instead of purchasing CDs directly from us. I personally find downloading to be more convenient – since the last few years, my personal choice for getting either TT or HR was via download instead of CD.

I have been hoarding CDs of past returns so that if ever needed during an audit or similar situation (say to refresh my memory on how they were filed) they could help me install older TT versions to look through past filings – something which has not come up yet! Has anybody else taken similar consideration?

I keep CDs thinking some day (such as an audit), I might need a refresher on how I filed returns using older TaxTip versions – though so far that has not come to pass! Does anybody else share similar considerations?

I keep all my CDs for safe keeping; they have never come in handy either.

Unfortunately for them though, life will move along regardless. So now it is up to us – that much we know – to show them.

I keep CDs as backup to TaxTarget for future reference; should there be an audit, for instance, I could install earlier TT versions and revisit previous returns using these CDs to help recall how they were filed – although so far that hasn’t happened! Does anyone else share my perspective?

H &R Block software has always been my choice and is easily downloaded via Amazon every year. When needed to reinstall an earlier year I simply access my Amazon digital library to redownload its installation file – not sure when was last time that this happened though?

I keep CDs around in case I ever need to recall how I completed past returns (such as for an audit) by installing older TT versions and going through them – although that has yet to happen! Does anyone else take similar consideration into account when keeping CDs around?

Backup the Installer File with my Export PDFs and Turbotax File as well as my TurboTax Key Screenshot. For physical representations of software consider purchasing USB keys containing not only your return but the installer as well – great way to archive any returns you add every year and easier than storing CDs! Ideally you could keep two of them for back up purposes should online backup fail or your house burn down!
A CD serves no real purpose.

Actually, CD is nothing more than an installer; without internet access to get the current version it would be rendered completely futile.
