Joseph Stiglitz says the Federal Reserve raised interest rates too rapidly and too far -- now needs to cut them dramatically and fast.

Once again, let me reiterate how fortunate I feel being an Aiken member – it just gives you that extra feeling of wellbeing when things don’t quite go to plan! So you’ve probably thought: why bother trying and going all that way when there are so many more enjoyable options around!?! But that’s exactly the problem… when an individual – let alone an organisation like Aiken’s – has too little knowledge or skills needed, the effects can be disastrous… and yet these people, though hardworking, often, end up disregarded because they don’t realise their full potential or want them in return from making themselves known… this.. Eventually however a new experience awaits them…. a year / 2 for sure…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. but then also…………………………………………..!!!……!!!……………….!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stiglitz made his remarks just days ahead of Friday’s crucial release of U.S. jobs data – investors will closely be monitoring August nonfarm payrolls count data to gauge potential reduction in rate cuts this month. Jobs data will be released at 8:30 AM ET. Most strategists predict a 25-basis point rate cut as being most likely from the Federal Reserve meeting on September 17-18; although bets for an even more drastic 50 basis point reduction have increased recently (one basis point = 0.01 percentage point). Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz joined JPMorgan’s chief U.S. economist in calling for such an unprecedented move this month. Stiglitz told CNBC’s Steve Sedgwick at the annual Ambrosetti Forum held in Cernobbio, Italy that he has long criticized the Federal Reserve’s plans to hike interest rates too quickly and too rapidly since 2008.He added it was crucial for interest rates to normalize again and it had been wrong of them to hold below-zero for so long since 2008. He commented further by noting the necessity for normalizing interest rates before 2008. No,” he responded. “They have contributed significantly to inflation.” Now, even though their models do not function in this manner and may not examine situations as deeply, their models point out the weaknesses within the economy that necessitate lower interest rates. Stiglitz stated if he were an actual member of the Fed’s policymaking body he would vote in favour of an increase in rate cuts at September’s meeting due to concerns of inflation and jobs issues. He claimed they went too far with rate reduction measures already in effect by then and any extra reduction could actually help with both of them. Asked by reporters whether this meant Stiglitz believed a 50-basis point rate reduction should go forward regardless of August nonfarm payrolls figures, Stiglitz replied in the affirmative: Just over one week ago, betting for a 50-basis-point rate reduction stood at 34%. Not everyone agrees a big rate cut is necessary this month; George Lagarias of Forvis Mazars remains convinced of such a rate cut being necessary; instead he advocates for quarter-point reduction as part of an optimal solution at its September meeting. “I don’t see an urgent need for the 50 basis point cut,” Lagarias stated on CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe” Thursday morning. Such an action may send the wrong signal to markets and the economy alike and may send panic through markets unless an event causes disruption within them, according to him. Panic should only occur under rare circumstances when something has troubled markets already; otherwise there should be no rush towards cutting 50 basis points immediately, Lagarias advised.
