Ramp to Camp: What will be the key storylines facing the Celtics on Day One of Training Camp? As previously seen on NBC Sports Boston, when the Boston Celtics convened for training camp a year ago there were plenty of storylines surrounding their roster: with Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday joining and core members Marcus Smart and Robert Williams III leaving. After being stunned in Game 7 at home during the Eastern Conference Finals and missing a shot at returning to the Finals stage, things are different this year as the Celtics are back as champions with nearly the same roster in tow. As part of our Ramp to Camp 2024 series, for our fourth installment we asked our panel a more open-ended question: Which storyline are you most intrigued about when the Celtics open training camp on September 25? (You can check out previous installments of Ramp to Camp here.) Boston will enter 2024-25 season as an underdog; our selection aims to show what will define them throughout this campaign: are they willing to put in the work necessary for another title defense and approach this new chapter with as much zeal? In 2023-24 Celtics had come with one mission in mind and was determined to end NBA’s drought of repeat champions; once attained there, how will they approach next campaign once back at top again? The 2023-24 team did just that! Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown arrived early to the Auerbach Center, setting the pace and setting an impressive example for everyone else to follow in training camp sessions and regular-season practices alike. The Celtics undoubtedly enjoyed themselves this season, yet even newcomers noticed how tightly focused everyone on getting over the final hurdle and earning Banner 18. These players possess so much talent — evidenced in how dominantly they performed last season — that sometimes it seems as though only themselves can stand between them and reaching their ultimate goal. As camp begins, our focus will be to understand how the Celtics approach upcoming challenges and hurdles with poise and perseverance. And the good news? They do! Early results point toward this team having plenty of motivation, with Tatum and Brown finding inspiration even from Team USA’s disrespect of them this summer. Success hinges upon having enough mental stamina to persevere over what could be an extremely long and winding journey towards reaching our desired objective. After spending much of their summer celebrating their successes, our panelists are keen to see how quickly players are transitioning into their next chapter. Here is what our panel will focus on:John Tomase (Columnist) will ask whether everyone remains physically in shape while some might let down during championship season; Tom Giles, Multi-platform host: Motivated Jays? How will Brown react to being excluded from Olympic competition while Tatum looks on and contemplates taking up one or another Olympic role (or not taking one up at all)? Will they burst forth like wildfire?Mark Hazlett, Multi-platform Producer Joe Mazzulla knows more than anyone that his team might become complacent; therefore he likely arrives to camp equipped with some interesting tactics in order to keep everyone alert. Can’t wait to see who it will be!Darren Hartwell, Managing Editor: Mazzulla Setting the ToneMazzulla has answered critics by leading his Celtics to victory during just his second year as head coach and winning an NBA Championship in just under six seasons as head coach. He’s known to be fiercely competitive, so we are eager to hear what message he sends his players and the media regarding last season’s championship loss.Justin Leger, Web Producer: Motivated Jays? How motivated do Tatum and Brown look following their respective Olympic omissions? Without significant roster modifications since their championship season, all eyes should remain focused on the Jays to assess if it’s evident they have an edge, especially Brown. Nick Goss from Web Producer posed the following question to Kevin Miller from VP Content Kevin Miller said the following about The Jays development each season and can Xavier Tillman become an impact rotation backup to Al Horford?
